Celtic’s comprehensive win in Feyenoord’s iconic de Kuip was not only good for our own chances of progression in the Europa League, but for our country’s alarmingly decreasing coefficient due to too many disappointing results by our clubs in European football.
For example, theRangers who were so often lauded for their ‘heroics’ on the Europa League stage failed to win yet again against a ten man Braga side despite being gifted a penalty no-one else but VAR spotted and none of the their players claimed for.
They languish at the bottom end of the standings with just a solitary point, with it looking ever so likely that they will struggle to earn a play off spot. In fact they’ have to win all of their three remaining games and even then that might not be enough.
The latest Ibrox club have been an embarrassment at Champions League level, and it’s now been quite some time since they earned a reputation as decent performers at Europa League level, not that the Scottish mainstream media would ever mention it. They have been letting the coefficient down in a massive way for a number of years now, remember then getting zero points in their last Champions League campaign?
Scotland’s only other representatives, Aberdeen who are competing in the Conference League, also failed to win after being held to a 1-1 stalemate at Pittodrie against Armenian outfit Noah. The Dons look extremely unlikely to progress after enduing a dreadful campaign in European football so far this season.
Once again it’s down to Celtic to save face, and add some much needed points to the coefficient, with the hardest game of the three, the only one away from home but with Martin O’Neill in charge of Celtic anything it seems is possible.
The way Celtic dominated the game in that second half last night was absolutely incredible. The goals were magnificent and how the away support deserved their big night as Celtic won away. Shaun Maloney’s tactical approach should be recognised as being significant and hopefully Wilfried Nancy, if he was unsure before, will have made his mind up and decide to retain Shaun’s services on the coaching role.
Darren O’Dea is out of work after losing his job at Swansea after just six months away. Bring him back to be the Pathways Manager and keep wee Shaun on the coaching staff.
Last season Celtic’s impressive Champions League campaign looks like being followed up with a decent run on the Europa League and that alone is going to make a positive impact on the co-efficient standings while the other clubs have been failing last season and again in this campaign.
Qualifying for the Champions League is about to get tougher for the Scottish Champions and maybe making the Europa is going to be the best the rest can hope for. The likes of Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs seem destined to be Conference League sides at best for the next few years while theRangers could end up at that level too.
Their best hope is Celtic flying the flag for Scotland in European football.
