England may have booked their place in the next round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over DR Congo, but the scoreline did little to hide what many supporters described as one of the Three Lions’ most worrying performances of the tournament.

DR Congo matched England physically and tactically, creating several dangerous moments and exposing weaknesses that could prove costly against stronger opposition.

The former striker also questioned Djed Spence’s display.
“Djed Spence struggled defensively throughout the game. Against stronger teams, mistakes like that will be punished even more severely. England cannot afford those lapses if they genuinely believe they can lift the World Cup.”
Shearer then issued what he described as a warning to Thomas Tuchel as England prepare for the next stage of the competition.
“This tournament only gets harder from here. If England continue selecting players who consistently underperform, they won’t be in the World Cup much longer. Tough decisions have to be made.”
He concluded with his strongest message yet.
“If England really want to go deep in this tournament, sentiment has to disappear. Reputation doesn’t win World Cups performances do. Every player has to earn the shirt every single game.”
England’s victory ensured progression, but it also raised fresh questions about whether several members of Tuchel’s squad are capable of delivering under the immense pressure of knockout football.
For now, Harry Kane’s brilliance has masked England’s flaws. But unless those performances improve quickly, tougher opponents may not be so forgiving.
