Jacob Murphy stared into the hallowed turf in pure disbelief in the immediate aftermath of Newcastle United’s 1-1 draw with Barcelona.

The winger came on with 24 minutes left and looked like he had set up a famous goal for Harvey Barnes at the death. But Newcastle managed to find a way to draw the game when Malick Thiaw upended Dani Olmo at the Leazes End to hand Barca a 96th-minute penalty.

The night ended in stormy scenes between Newcastle players as Joelinton and Anthony Gordon rowed over a loss of possession which led to the penalty kick. But with tensions still raw, the players that came on as sub, including Jacob Murphy, were put through their paces for a warm down.

After it Murphy sank to his honkers and was inconsolable as he stared into the ground, knowing that Newcastle’s game management had let them down again. With a game against Chelsea now on the horizon at Stamford Bridge it will be difficult to park the Champions League tie.

Eddie Howe admitted to Chronicle Live after the game: “That is the challenge for us – is it going to be easy for us and the players, probably not. I think naturally they will have half an eye on next week, they are human beings. But we have to make sure the focus is firmly on Chelsea first.

“It is a hard enough game as it is without being 100% committed focused on the details of that game. I think it is my job to make it clear to the players.

We need to pack up the performance from today, we can’t let it slide. There was so much good from it and so much of us at our best, we need more of that on a consistent basis.”
