“It’s over”: Celtic fans call for club legends to be sold after 3–1 humiliation

Celtic’s title hopes have been thrown into doubt after a bruising 3–1 defeat left supporters furious and questioning the commitment of several senior players.

The loss in five matches  prompted a wave of online criticism from fans, many of whom declared “the title race is over” unless major changes are made.

Poor performance sparks anger

Celtic began the match brightly but loss hope after own goal and equalize after some minutes in first half. The opposition (hearts) completely dominated the second period, scoring twice more to secure a convincing 3–1 win.

A large section of the Celtic support took to social media within minutes of the final whistle, calling for two long-serving figures, Kenny and Tounekti, to be sold before the January window closes. Another player, Nygren, was also singled out for his poor display as frustration boiled over.

According to post-match statistics, Celtic managed just one shot on target across the 90 minutes  a statistic that has angered supporters even more.

On fan forums and social media, criticism centred on three players: Nygren, Kenny and Tounekti. Many questioned their energy levels and desire, describing the performance as “lifeless” and “unacceptable for a club chasing the title.”

“One shot in 90 minutes says it all,” wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter). “Nygren invisible, Tounekti looks finished, and Kenny doesn’t look interested. If we don’t make changes now, the title’s gone.”

Calls for major decisions

While Celtic remain mathematically in the race, the mood among fans was one of resignation. Some called on manager Brendan Rodgers (fictionally or implied) to take decisive action, dropping or even selling high-profile players who have underperformed.

“The title race is over if we keep playing like this,” another supporter posted. “Kenny and Tounekti have been great servants, but it’s time to move them on. We need fresh energy before it’s too late.”

The defeat leaves Celtic trailing their rivals by several points with only a handful of league fixtures remaining before the winter break. Although the gap is still recoverable, the manner of the loss  combined with recent draws  has increased pressure on the squad.

Manager defends team but admits frustration

In his post-match interview, the manager attempted to calm the growing unrest, insisting that the players remain fully committed.

“We’re disappointed, of course,” he said. “It wasn’t the performance we wanted, and the fans have every right to be frustrated. But this group has shown before that it can respond. There’s still a lot of football to be played.”

However, he also admitted that some individuals “need to rediscover their best form quickly” and hinted at possible rotation in upcoming fixtures.

Legends under scrutiny

The criticism of Kenny and Tounekti is particularly striking given their long association with the club. Both players have been instrumental in past successes, helping Celtic lift multiple domestic trophies and playing key roles in European campaigns.

Yet supporters now fear sentiment is holding the team back. Some have argued that the club’s loyalty to its senior figures is preventing younger players from getting opportunities.

“We love them for what they’ve done,” wrote one fan blog. “But football moves fast. If we keep relying on names from the past, we’ll be watching someone else lift the trophy.”

The coming weeks could prove decisive for Celtic’s season. They face two crucial league fixtures before the winter break — including a derby clash that could define the campaign. Anything less than maximum points will likely intensify calls for change.

Behind the scenes, the club hierarchy is expected to hold internal discussions about recruitment and potential departures in the January window. Whether that leads to the sale of Kenny or Tounekti remains to be seen, but pressure from the fanbase is growing.

For now, the message from supporters is clear: unless performances improve immediately, Celtic’s grip on the title could be slipping away.
