Derek Ferguson has shared his thoughts on Rangers sacking Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell

Rangers decision to axe former chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell is still a hot topic of conversation, and Derek Ferguson has weighed in on the matter.

The duo had been feeling the pressure from fans following the team’s poor start to the season, which eventually led to the sacking of ex-manager Russell Martin. The Englishman’s 123 days in charge marked the shortest ever tenure served by a permanent figure at Ibrox.

Prior to his dismissal, Rangers’ home games became a fiery cauldron with fans making their distaste for Martin known. Stewart and Thelwell didn’t escape the firing line, either.

Following their defeat to Hearts back in September, former Rangers star Kevin Thomson said of the Ibrox atmosphere: “Just behind me in the gantry there were quite a lot of fans being quite disrespectful to Kevin Thelwell.

“I’m assuming Patrick Stewart was there as well, I didn’t see the cameras obviously, I’m just reacting off what was going on over my shoulder really. It was volatile, toxic… it was really sad to see really.”

The decision to axe Patrick and Thelwell is another significant one made by the club’s new owners.

Consortium leader Andrew Cavenagh said: “We’ve now had six months since we became part of Rangers to assess the club’s needs as well as to get to know Patrick and Kev a bit more.

“And, simply put, when we think about what we need in both a CEO and sporting director today, it’s different than who we think Patrick and Kev are. We want people that align with the vision for the next chapter.

“I will not throw dirt on either of them. I think very highly of them both on personal and professional levels. It’s just the reality that the club needs different things today than it did six months ago.”

Ferguson guessed chairman Kavanagh and 49ers Enterprises deemed both figures ‘unfit for purpose’ at Rangers, particularly based on the club’s recent player recruitment record.

“The 49ers have had a look at them, and they’ve not been fit for purpose,” he said on the Right in the Coupon podcast.

“You look at the squad and they are clearly lacking quality, but even with the signings, they guys he’s [Thelwell] been bringing into the club as well, what are you up to? Are you treating the club disrespectfully?

“Where we were even a season ago with the players, are they any better? And everybody’s spoke about it the last week or so. And they’re not, we’re in a worse position.”
