Rangers to bank boosted Nico Raskin transfer fee after rare good news update
Nico Raskin looks set to net Rangers are greater transfer fee if he leaves the club this season.
Having been frozen out early in the campaign under former boss Russell Martin Raskin has rebounded to be one of the key men in Danny Rohl‘s squad.
Raskin’s next move after leaving Ibrox has been a regular point of focus ever since he signed from Standard Liege almost three years ago.
Despite his importance to this season’s struggling Rangers vintage it has been speculated that Raskin might leave in January to fund yet another rebuild under a new manager.
Even if the 24-year-old remains until the conclusion of the campaign, or even another full season after that, the club are now in position to bring in more cash in any of the upcoming windows than previously thought.
Nico Raskin’s Rangers contract expires in 2028
Rangers Review have reported that, contrary to fan fears, the Belgian’s deal currently expires in the summer of 2028, not the summer of 2027 as believed.
Raskin signed a four-and-a-half-year contract in January 2023 but it has emerged that it also contained an extra year option which has now been automatically triggered to extend the deal.
Raskin’s father has indicated that his son intends to stay at Rangers under Rohl for the time being, having reportedly snubbed interest from Besiktas in Turkey late in the previous window.
The longer the remaining amount of his contract left whenever the Light Blues do choose to cash in on him, the more money they can hold out for, assuming his status as a key man endures.
Long-term Raskin stay would be failure
It would likely always been part of the plan for Raskin to be sold on at a significant profit on the roughly £1 million it cost to land him ahead of his contract expiring in Belgium.
In an ideal world he would probably have starred already to such an extent that an English or European heavyweight was willing to stump up big money for him, with Raskin admitting he had aspirations to join Chelsea in the future.
The arrival of Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises may have eased the financial situation at Ibrox, and the exit of Kevin Thelwell might improve the recruitment, but to be sustainable they still need to generate a proper player trading model, although the summer was a dismal start in that regard.
Rohl will surely want Raskin in his ranks until the end of the campaign at least, but if he’s still in Glasgow anywhere near the expiry of his extended deal it will likely mean something has gone badly wrong, form or fitness-wise
