Rangers have made a surprise approach to re-sign Wrexham’s Josh Windass, GMS understands, even though the Welsh side don’t wish to sanction an exit.

The Gers currently find themselves sitting in fourth place in the Scottish Premiership table, 12 points behind league leaders Hearts after a 2-1 defeat against Derek McInnes’ side last time out, and finding a source of more goals is one priority in the winter market. Windass is one name discussed with the former Rangers forward understood to be aware of the interest.

Rangers Make Loan Enquiry for Josh Windass

The Ibrox side have made a loan enquiry to Wrexham for January in a move driven by Windass’ former boss Rohl.

Windass, described as ‘magical’ by BBC journalist Rob Staton, spent six seasons at Sheffield Wednesday, scoring 50 times, playing under Rohl in his final two seasons at Hillsborough.

Pedro Caxinha, previously of Rangers, also wanted to sign Windass for Santos in January this year during his brief spell with the Brazilian club, but Sheffield Wednesday refused to engage and Wrexham subsequently made their move over the summer.

31-year-old Windass was at Rangers between 2016 and 2018 and scored 18 goals in all competitions in 2017/18, including 13 in the Scottish Championship.

GIVEMESPORT understands Rangers want to add more goals as they aim to climb the Scottish Premiership table, with Motherwell, Hearts, and Celtic all outscoring them in the league this season.

Wrexham don’t want to sell or loan Windass having only signed him on a free transfer over the summer.

Windass has six league goals this season, but with Wrexham 15th in the Championship, he has not ruled out another transfer in 2026.

His familiarity with both Rangers and Rohl, coupled with the chance to play European football, could prompt Windass to consider a move back to Scotland, but it remains to be seen whether Wrexham can be persuaded to sanction an exit.

Ayunga scored the brace that proved to be decisive in the final, with Gogic assisting his first goal, while Mandron scored in this weekend’s 1-0 win over Livingston.

All three players have enjoyed far better seasons already for St. Mirren compared to Rangers, and it highlights the recruitment issues in Govan.

Ferguson previously stated that he would have signed Lawrence Shankland, and it’s fair to say that Rangers completely dropped the ball.
