Celtic forced to intervene after sky sports request involving Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton

Chris Sutton puts Kris Boyd in his place about Martin O’Neill returning to Celtic

Celtic suffered one of their lowest lows over the weekend against Rangers.

It hasn’t happened very often, but Kris Boyd was enjoying himself in the Sky Sports studios at Celtic Park because the Hoops were creating history for all the wrong reasons under the now-sacked Wilfried Nancy.

But thankfully, Celtic have ended Nancy’s reign, and did what they should have done in the first place, and offered Martin O’Neill a contract until the end of the season.

It’s fair to say that the mood around Celtic is far better now, and Chris Sutton made sure his fellow Sky pundit knew about it.

Chris Sutton jibes at Kris Boyd after Martin O’Neill returns to Celtic…AGAIN

The main aim for Celtic is to win the Premiership title. It’s that simple.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football (06/01/26), Sutton stated that Boyd ‘isn’t smiling’ anymore because O’Neill has returned for a third spell.

Boyd did try to spout nonsense about O’Neill’s age, and how Sutton would have a problem if another club was appointing a 73-year-old.

But thankfully, the legendary Treble-winner put Boyd in his place and stated that Celtic now have a better chance of winning title number 56 this season.

Sutton: “I think Celtic have a far better chance of winning the league with Martin at the helm. Kris isn’t smiling so much now that Martin’s back.

“The Celtic fanbase felt that under Wilfried Nancy, they had no chance of winning the league. Bring Martin back. Back him.”

Boyd: “Martin has come back in. How it will play out from now until the end of the season, nobody knows. Will he get players in? You would imagine that he will.

“Chris, I am surprised. If there were any other club that appointed a 73-year-old manager, you would have a lot to say about it.”

Sutton: “The age doesn’t matter. It’s his hunger. Martin has said that he doesn’t want to go beyond the season.

“So, he is going to put everything into this. He has come back to do the club a favour. Big split between the fanbase and the board. Martin is the glue trying to pull everyone together.”

Sutton hits the nail on the head about Celtic hero O’Neill

When O’Neill returned the first time around, there was a nostalgic feel about it all, and that’s still the case now.

Sutton explained how the legendary coach is ‘adored’ by everyone from his era, but he did warn the Celtic board that they have to back him during the January transfer window.

“Every player from my era adored Martin O’Neill,” added Sutton. “I admire him so much coming back, the second time around.

I am all for it. But I am for it on one condition, and that’s the fact that he is backed heavily in January, in terms of new players coming into the club.

“And if he’s not, it’s a dereliction of duty from the football hierarchy; they shouldn’t be bringing him back if they aren’t going to back him.”
