Celtic fans tear into their star player, demand he’s sold immediately, after ‘Shocking’ performances vs st. Mirren

Celtic supporters are voicing their frustration after a dismal display from right-back in the  home draw against St. Mirren, with many calling for the club to sell the Canadian international as soon as the summer transfer window opens.

The match at Celtic Park, which ended in a disappointing 1:1 draw, saw Celtic drop valuable points in their chase for the Scottish Premiership title. But it wasn’t just the result that left fans seething  it was the manner of the performance, particularly from Johnston, whose defensive errors and lack of urgency were singled out as major reasons for the team’s failure to secure a win.

Johnston, who joined Celtic from CF Montréal in 2022 and quickly became a regular in the starting XI, has generally been a dependable figure in the Hoops’ backline. However, his recent form has been under scrutiny, and the match against St. Mirren appears to have been the final straw for many fans.

In a game where Celtic were expected to dominate, Johnston struggled to deal with St. Mirren’s direct play, often caught out of position and slow to react. One of his most costly mistakes came in the second half, when a poorly timed lunge allowed St. Mirren’s winger to breeze past and deliver a cross that led to the visitors’ second goal.

Social media erupted soon after, with fans branding Johnston’s performance as “shocking,” “sloppy,” and “unacceptable” for a club of Celtic’s stature. Some even described it as his “worst game in a Celtic shirt.”

Following the match, “Johnston” quickly trended on social platforms, with thousands of fans weighing in on his recent displays. A large section of the support believes his form has dipped alarmingly in recent months, and that Celtic cannot afford to carry any passengers in a team still fighting for domestic dominance and aiming for a stronger European campaign next season.

“Time to cut our losses. He’s a liability every time the opposition counters,” wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter). “If we want to progress in Europe, we need a right-back who can defend AND push forward. Johnston is neither right now.”

Another added: “Was a solid player when he came in, but let’s be honest  he’s regressed massively. That performance against St. Mirren was embarrassing. Sell him while he’s still got value.”

Despite the fan uproar, manager Brendan Rodgers has not yet commented publicly on Johnston’s status. The Canadian has been a regular selection under both Rodgers and former manager Ange Postecoglou, and the coaching staff has praised his work ethic and physicality in the past.

However, with Celtic likely to make several changes over the summer  especially with Champions League qualifiers on the horizon  the pressure is mounting on the club’s decision-makers to reassess certain positions, including right-back.

Johnston, 25, still has a few years left on his contract, and he has drawn interest from clubs in the English Championship and MLS in recent months. If Celtic were to consider offers, they might hope to recoup a significant portion of the reported £3 million they paid for him.

While some fans have called for calm and patience, noting Johnston’s previous consistency and his contributions in key matches last season, the overall sentiment among the Celtic faithful appears to be one of growing disillusionment.

For Johnston, the next few games could be make-or-break. Unless he can quickly turn things around and restore confidence in his abilities, his future at Celtic Park may be in serious doubt.
