FURIOUS MARTIN O’NEILL SLAMS CELTIC STAR AFTER DISASTROUS DISPLAY AGAINST CELTA, CLAIMS HIS CAREER AT THE CLUB COULD BE OVER FOLLOWING 2–1 LOSS

Celtic have suffered another disappointing European night after surrendering their advantage to lose 2–1 against Celta Vigo at Celtic Park, leaving manager Martin O’Neill frustrated with aspects of his team’s performance.

The Europa League encounter appeared to be heading in Celtic’s favour when Mika Baur opened the scoring in the 47th minute, giving the home supporters reason to believe their side could secure a valuable result.

However, Celta Vigo responded through J. Rodríguez, who scored twice in the 68th and 71st minutes to turn the contest around and leave the Scottish champions facing another difficult night in Europe.

The defeat has raised questions about Celtic’s defensive organisation, particularly during the second half, when the visitors found opportunities to punish their opponents.

O’Neill was left disappointed by what he saw from several of his players, but one defensive performance stood out as a particular concern as the manager considered what went wrong at Celtic Park.

O’Neill left frustrated after Celtic surrender their lead

Celtic entered the second half with renewed confidence after Baur found the back of the net shortly after the restart.

The goal gave the home side an opportunity to control the contest, protect their advantage and put pressure on their Spanish opponents.

Instead, Celtic struggled to maintain their position as Celta Vigo gradually found a way back into the match.

Rodríguez’s equaliser in the 68th minute changed the atmosphere inside Celtic Park, and his second goal just three minutes later completed the turnaround.

For a manager who expects his players to remain disciplined and focused throughout European fixtures, the manner in which Celtic conceded twice in quick succession would naturally be a major concern.

The result also highlighted the importance of defensive concentration at this level, where a brief loss of organisation can quickly change the outcome of a match.

Although Celtic had their positive moments, the final score left O’Neill with difficult questions to consider ahead of the club’s next assignment.

SPEAKING TO JOURNALIST AFTER FINAL WHISTLE;

“I’m extremely disappointed with the result. We led, but our second-half performance fell below this club’s standards. Some players gave everything, but others must reflect. Liam Scales’ performance needs review. We cannot keep making these mistakes in Europe.

“We have done well domestically, but Europe demands more discipline, concentration and confidence. We must learn from this defeat and improve.

“I ask our supporters to remain patient. I understand their frustration, but consistency requires commitment and accountability from everyone. We must respond strongly in our next matches.”

The Irish centre-back has been part of Celtic’s defensive options, but performances in high-pressure European matches can have significant consequences when managers assess their squads.

FANS REACTION ON X

🗣️ @Jamie_Campbell: “O’Neill is talking about consistency, but we need to see improvements on the pitch. Words are not enough!”

🗣️ @Callum_Fraser: “How do we take the lead and throw it away like that? This defending is absolutely unacceptable!”

🗣️ @Ryan_MacLeod: “Scales has serious questions to answer after that performance. O’Neill must make the right decisions now!”

🗣️ @Ross_McKenzie: “We can dominate Scottish football, but Europe is a different level. Celtic must learn quickly!”

🗣️ @Euan_Thomson: “We will remain patient, Martin, but please fix these defensive problems before our next European game!”

With Celtic allowing their opponents to score twice in the second half, defensive responsibility is inevitably a subject of scrutiny.

Scales’ performance is the focus of this developing story, particularly in relation to the concerns surrounding Celtic’s ability to protect a lead.

The most damaging aspect of Celtic’s defeat was the speed with which the game turned against them.

After Baur’s 47th-minute opener, Celtic had placed themselves in a promising position. Yet Rodríguez’s goals in the 68th and 71st minutes exposed the danger of allowing an opponent to regain momentum.

At European level, defenders are expected to communicate effectively, maintain their positioning and remain alert when opponents increase the pressure.

Defensive mistakes can involve several players, including those responsible for tracking runners, applying pressure and providing cover.

However, that does not remove the need for individual accountability when performances fall below the required standard.

A review of the team’s performance would be a logical step following a defeat of this nature. Whether that review leads to changes involving Scales will depend on the manager’s assessment of the match and the options available to him.

For Celtic, the priority is to learn from the defeat rather than allow frustration to carry into their upcoming fixtures.

The loss to Celta Vigo will hurt, particularly because Celtic had taken the lead and appeared capable of securing a positive result.

Baur gave the home supporters hope, but Rodríguez’s quick-fire double ultimately decided the contest.

Celtic must now address the defensive issues that contributed to the defeat, while Scales will need to demonstrate that he can meet the demands of the club’s European ambitions.

Whether O’Neill makes changes to his defence remains to be seen. What is clear is that Celtic cannot afford to repeat the same mistakes if they want to compete more consistently against European opposition.
