Dion Dublin Sparks Debate by Calling Ronaldo the Greatest Goalscorer Over Messi
Football fans have been reigniting one of the sport’s fiercest debates after former Premier League striker Dion Dublin claimed Cristiano Ronaldo is a superior goalscorer compared to Lionel Messi. Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Dublin praised both legends but leaned in favour of the Portuguese star when it comes to finding the back of the net.
“I think Cristiano Ronaldo is a better goalscorer than Lionel Messi,” Dublin said. “I think Messi is the better footballer, but Ronaldo is the best goalscorer in the world.”
The ex-Coventry City and Aston Villa forward, who netted 111 goals during his own Premier League career, pointed to Ronaldo’s staggering hat-trick tally as evidence of his claim.
“This is how good Ronaldo was as a goalscorer: I scored 111 goals during my stint in the Premier League as a striker. He has scored something like 63 hat-tricks. How can someone have done that? It’s crazy!” Dublin exclaimed.
Joining him on the podcast was former England manager Sam Allardyce, who reflected fondly on the era dominated by both superstars, particularly during their La Liga days at Real Madrid and Barcelona.
“We had the best time of it watching Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo competing against each other year in, year out in Spain for ten years or so on the trot,” said Allardyce. “They were both hitting 30, 40 goals a season, with neither of them playing as a centre forward. Ronaldo might’ve ended up there in the later years but he’s always played wide, and Messi just played anywhere he wanted!”
Allardyce acknowledged the dominance both players shared over the sport for more than a decade, particularly through their constant duels for the Ballon d’Or.
“The Ballon d’Or every year was just a case of wondering which one of those two it was going to be that year! It was an amazing time to just watch two world class players at the same time.”
Allardyce also reminisced about Ronaldo’s early days at Manchester United, particularly his first appearance in English football.
“I remember when I first saw Ronaldo when he came on as a sub against Bolton when he’d just been bought from Portugal he just destroyed Nicky Hunt in defence. I was standing there in the dugout thinking, ‘wow’,” he said.
The debate over who stands taller in football history Messi or Ronaldo continues to divide fans. While Dublin’s comments have stirred up fresh discussion, even he conceded Messi’s all-around play gives him the edge as a footballer. However, for pure goalscoring, his vote goes to the five time Ballon d’Or winner from Portugal.
