Celtic have breached SPFL’s financial rules for the second year in a row and could be sanctioned
Celtic are expected to be active in the summer transfer market, with journalist Scott Burns outlining a clear plan for Brendan Rodgers’ squad overhaul.
Burns, known for his accurate reporting on the Scottish game, has revealed the club could be looking to bring in as many as five new faces.
The departure of Kyogo to France in January left a void up front that was never addressed, and the need for a new striker has become a priority. Despite Adam Idah scoring in spells, and Daizen Maeda’s tireless work rate, the striking department remains thin. Johnny Kenny is still seen as a developmental player rather a than first-team starter week in week out.
On the wings, the long-term injury to Jota—reportedly sidelined until 2026—has forced Celtic’s hand. While James Forrest and Nicolas Kuhn each have had moments of brilliance, and Yang Hyun-jun remains a rotational option, there’s an clear need for more consistent quality out wide.
Burns said: (RecordSport), “I think Celtic will make at least four or five signings.
“That would be a left-back, if Greg Taylor does go, a central midfielder, a defensive midfielder, a right winger and possibly another striker.”
In midfield, the club are not only eyeing creativity but also a bit more steel. Burns’ mention of both a central midfielder and a defensive-minded addition suggests Celtic are looking for balance in the middle of the park.
Callum McGregor remains the anchor in midfield, but Reo Hatate and Paulo Bernardo are still working to regain full sharpness during pre-season. With Arne Engels failing to step up consistently and Luke McCowan still finding his way into the starting XI, there is clearly room for improvement.
Kieran Tierney penned a pre-contract in January and is set to rejoin the club next month. With Greg Taylor yet to agree a new deal and Liam Scales playing more regularly at centre-back, options at left-back are limited. While Scales can provide cover, it’s far from ideal to rely on him there full-time. Mitchel Frame, meanwhile, has barely featured for the first team over the past 18 months, leaving a clear need for reinforcements in that area.
With Champions League qualifiers looming and Rangers also expected to invest, Celtic’s summer business will be crucial in setting the tone for the new campaign.
