‘Looks offside’ – Aberdeen question VAR lines on Celtic winner and rue Lyall Cameron staying on his feet

Aberdeen head coach Peter Leven questioned why two lines were not drawn by VAR when checking Benjamin Nygren’s winner for Celtic at Pittodrie.

Nygren netted on 67 minutes to give Celtic at 2-1 win against the Dons and maintain their Premiership title hopes. But the goal was put under the microscope by VAR for a potential offside, only for Chris Graham and his team to deem it onside.

A still showed that Gavin Molloy was just playing Nygren onside but other images suggested the Swede had encroached beyond the last defender. Leven was left unconvinced by the affair – and said the image in question only had one line drawn.

“It looks offside but why’s there not two lines drawn?” said Leven. “There was only one drawn. But listen, right now it’s not going for us, these decisions in the game.”

The caretaker manager also lamented Lyall Cameron staying on his feet when Reo Hatate recklessly slid towards him in the penalty box in stoppage time.

“Players need to be a bit more streetwise,” continued Leven. “Lyall needs to ask the question late on when Hatate goes in. I thought the players worked really hard today. We started the second-half really well, but listen, it’s just not going for us.

They worked really hard, but it’s zero points which is frustrating because I thought they put in a good shift tonight. They are a quality team, Celtic, but I’m proud of the players tonight.

“I think Lyall was too honest and stayed in his feet. [Graeme] Shinnie had a hand in the back and could’ve gone down. I think they need to be more streetwise. We need to start picking up points. I thought second-half we started really well and kept pressure on Celtic but we need to sustain that.”

Aberdeen now move on to Saturday evening’s Scottish Cup tie against Dunfermline. “It’s the next game, a huge game at the weekend,” added Leven. “We want to retain the title. The boys will rest and recover and will go again in the later part of the week.”

Peter Leven, Aberdeen’s interim manager, expressed frustration with the refereeing decision regarding Celtic’s winning goal. He felt the referee didn’t blow the whistle immediately, allowing Celtic’s player to score. Leven mentioned, “I saw the referee put his whistle to his mouth, drop it, then watch the play. Kevin finishes it off and then he blows the whistle again. I don’t know why he never blew straight away to stop it” ¹.

Leven also criticized his team’s defensive mistakes, saying they “opened up the game” and were punished with a goal. He added that Aberdeen needed to improve their performance, especially with long balls and matching opponents’ runs
