Spurs Set to Test Waters with €50M Move
Chairman Daniel Levy has recently made headlines by openly declaring his vision for Spurs aiming not just for domestic glory in the Premier League but also to lift the UEFA Champions League trophy. The appointment of Thomas Frank as manager is widely seen as the first bold step in turning that long-held dream into a concrete project.
To give Frank the tools he needs, Spurs are planning multiple additions to the squad. Several names have been linked already, including Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo and Everton’s defensive talent Jarrad Branthwaite. But Kudus has now emerged as a standout target in North London’s recruitment strategy.
According to a report from The Guardian (dated 18 June), the Ghanaian forward has an £85 million release clause in his current West Ham contract. However, Tottenham are said to be preparing a significantly lower offer in the region of €50 million to test the Hammers’ resolve.
Still, history and rivalry between the two clubs suggest this transfer is more fantasy than feasible.
Lilywhite Rose founder and Spurs insider John Wenham, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, poured cold water on the rumours.
“There is zero chance of Kudus joining Tottenham,” Wenham stated bluntly. “Transfers between Spurs and West Ham just don’t happen. You’d have to go back to 2011 to find the last time a player moved between these two clubs. The bad blood is real and it hasn’t faded.”
Wenham also pointed to similar past speculation like Spurs being linked with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher as examples of how intra-London politics often derail such moves.
“Even if West Ham were to part ways with Kudus, they certainly wouldn’t hand him over to a fierce rival like us,” he added. “Not to mention, Kudus will likely be unavailable during the Africa Cup of Nations, which overlaps with a very congested part of our fixture list.”
However, if Spurs do somehow pull off a shock agreement with the Hammers, it could set off internal shakeups at Hotspur Way. Chief among those potentially affected is Brennan Johnson.
Johnson, who finished last season as Tottenham’s top scorer and even bagged the winner in the UEFA Europa League final, may find his position under threat if Kudus is brought in to compete for the right-flank role.
Sources suggest that such a move could leave the Welsh forward questioning his place in the squad, potentially leading him to consider other options if regular playing time becomes uncertain.
As the summer transfer window heats up, the Kudus situation along with its ripple effects on the Spurs squad will be one to watch closely. Whether Tottenham and West Ham can set aside decades of rivalry for the sake of business remains the biggest hurdle.
