Danny Rohl believes Rangers are ready to go head-to-head with Serie A heavyweights Roma, because he sees “more resilience” in his team.
Despite the disappointment of being bundled out of the Premier Sports Cup by city rivals Celtic at the weekend, the Ibrox head coach says the dressing room is a very different place before the Italians’ visit from the one that bemoaned a feeble performance in Rohl’s debut as boss.
That night, Rangers lost 3-0 to Brann in Bergen – a third defeat out of three in the Europa League.
“My feeling at the moment is the group has more and more resilience at the moment,” said Rohl.
“There are some setbacks during a game, the team isn’t dropping off straight away.”

And the German added: “This is the minimum, these are the basics. They also breed confidence and belief. Of course, in the long term, it’s not just enough to have this resilience because these are the basics to win games.
“Now it’s about making the next steps in ball possession, in our pressing, in finishing, in defending in our box. If you can bring all these s as soon as possible, then you will win more and more games.
“I’m convinced because I see a lot of potential, I see a lot of players there at the moment growing up.”
That new-found maturity will be needed against a Roma side Rohl has a lot of respect for. Understandably so, given their position in the chasing pack in Italy’s top flight, just a point behind pacesetters Napoli after 10 games.
“Of course in this competition at the moment we have zero points,” he said. “We should start as soon as possible to take points, but we’re facing an opponent who is strong in the league.
“We know what we have to do, how we can hurt them and I think it’s important to understand that we also need to be brave and forward thinking.
“Some moments will be 50-50 – if you win duels, if you attack in the right spaces then you have a chance. If not, it would work in the other direction. It’s this balance we have to understand more.
“They’re not a team who concede a lot of goals and also they don’t score so many goals. When you look to the results, it’s 1-0, 2-1, 0-1. They press a lot man-to-man all over the pitch, so this will be the challenge.”
