Martin O’Neill was furious with the decision to send Auston Trusty off at Tynecastle. Does he have a point?

KEITH JACKSON: Not for me. Landry Kabore was a good 10 or 15 yards ahead of Liam Scales and Dane Murray was not tucked in as tightly as O’Neill seems to believe. The only real surprise was that ref Steven McLean needed a VAR intervention to make the correct call.

MICHAEL GANNON: He has an argument, as there is a case to be made Kabore was going away from goal and there might have been cover. But it looked like a goal scoring opportunity and VAR were right to step in and correct the on-field call.

SCOTT BURNS: It’s borderline. The ball is veering away from goal and there’s another Celtic player covering. But Hearts will argue if their player isn’t upended, he can get a shot at goal. I don’t think O’Neill can have too many complaints.

RYAN McDONALD: Everyone inside Tynecastle expected Steven McLean to produce a straight red. When the referee was sent to the monitor, Trusty already knew his fate and was heading for the tunnel. It was – or certainly should have been – a relatively straightforward decision.

Rangers have quietly slipped into second spot in the table with a 3-0 win over Dundee. Does Danny Rohl have the tools required to win this title?

KEITH JACKSON: He’s worked a minor miracle to claw his way back into the fight with what little Russell Martin left behind. But he could do with one or two more reinforcements if he’s to turn all this hard work into something tangible.

MICHAEL GANNON: Rangers have spent about £50m this season so if they don’t have the tools then something is wrong. Rohl’s men are the team in form and going in the right direction. They are now the team to beat.

SCOTT BURNS: He’d certainly like a few more before the transfer window shuts, namely a midfielder and a front-man. He’s got Rangers on a great run and they’re definitely in the title race. But they could do with a couple more weapons in the Ibrox armoury.

RYAN McDONALD: Yes. Rangers have shown real ambition in January and got their business done quickly. It’s hard to see them dropping many more points between now and May.

Motherwell are writing one of the most remarkable stories of a ridiculous season. But can they keep hold of Tawanda Maswanhise for the final chapter?

KEITH JACKSON: The Old Firm wouldn’t be doing their business properly if they don’t at least ask a serious question before the window shuts. But Motherwell should hold firm for the time being because one or both of them will almost certainly be back in the summer.

MICHAEL GANNON: It might be tough to keep him if a big money bid lands in the last week of the window. But this is no one man team under Berkou, Motherwell can complete a brilliant campaign with or without him.

SCOTT BURNS: I’ll be amazed if Maswanhise is still at Fir Park beyond February 2. The Old Firm should be battling it out for him given his current form but clubs in England and abroad will also have him on their radar.

RYAN McDONALD: It all hinges on whether a money-spinning bid lands. What Well will be dreading is an 11th-hour offer that’s simply too good to turn down – one that leaves them with no time to find a replacement. If they do manage to hold on to him, then who knows how far this season could go. The Scottish Cup has to be a realistic target.

After thumping defeats at the weekend are Livingston and Kilmarnock already doomed for the big drop?

KEITH JACKSON: It’s all been a bit of slog for Livi and Saturday’s pasting at Pittodrie sums up their season. They look like goners. Kilmarnock look set for a nail-biter in the play-offs but should have enough quality to survive by the skin of their teeth.

MICHAEL GANNON: Livingston’s results haven’t matched a lot of their performances but it’s hard to see them escaping. Killie look destined for the relegation play-off but they should have enough about them to survive against whatever Championship side they face.

SCOTT BURNS: It certainly looks that way. Livi have won one game in 23 so they look certain to go straight down and Killie don’t look good enough to drag St Mirren into a scrap to avoid the relegation play-off spot.

RYAN McDONALD: It’s hard to see how a Livi side on a 22-game winless run suddenly haul themselves out of this mess. Killie are in freefall too and Neil McCann hasn’t had the new-manager bounce he’ll have been craving. Looking above them, you’d expect St Mirren to click sooner rather than later, while Dundee have already shown they’re capable of producing a result from nowhere.
