Daniel Farke to face no sanction after Leeds vs Man City controversy comments

Daniel Farke should not face further punishment after his comments on his sending off against Manchester City, Keith Hackett has said.

Farke was dismissed after the final whistle as he approached Peter Bankes, with onlookers surprised over the Elland Road confrontation after the 1-0 loss.

The Premier League released a statement after the game, revealing why the Leeds boss had been shown the card, saying: “Daniel Farke was shown a red card for entering the pitch and confronting the referee after the final whistle.”

The German manager has now opened up about what caused the post-game scenes on 28 February, in his pre-Sunderland press conference.

What did Farke say about Manchester City red card?

Farke claimed that he did not use any foul language and asked the official why more added time had not been put on at the end of the contest.

He does not believe that the outcome was justified, and speaking on 2 March, he said: “I was told the Premier League, or the referees, will get in touch when they have the full report of the incident. It should be there pretty soon, then I have the chance to respond.

“The report will say what the red card was for. I’m not sure what the processes are and when we can appeal it, I’m not sure, I can just give you my gut feeling, this should not be a red card.

“When there has been a clear and obvious mistake, and for me this was a clear and obvious mistake, it should be overturned. This is what I’ve experienced when players have a red card by mistake, it can be overturned, and I expect the same.

I jogged over. Not one bad word. No swear words or bad language. I just wanted to ask him why he didn’t add any time on.

“He didn’t speak to me and just pulled out the red card. To pull out a red card and embarrass me in front of the whole world, I wasn’t happy.

“Even the assistants were shocked that the red card was shown. This is not how we should work with each other.”

Hackett believes that the Whites boss should seek to clarify his position as soon as possible,

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, he said: “I would recommend that Daniel Farke makes immediate contact with Richard Bevan, the CEO of the League Managers Association.

“He should respond immediately putting his side of the situation, and chase up the FA for a copy of the referee’s report.

“I must say that the referee was frankly quick and premature with the red card.

“I am clear that to avoid any public confrontation, I would prefer referees to quickly exit the field of play and a ban on Managers entering the field of play to confront the Match Officials.

“He is stating his side of the story, as it happened from his perspective; he should not receive any sanction for doing this.“

Given the former PGMOL chief’s opinion on the comments are that he should not been punished, it would be a surprise if he is handed any further bans or fines in this case by the Premier League.

He is right, Farke was simply explaining what he thought happened and responding to a question that he had been asked, he did not question the integrity of Bankes in his response.

Leeds announced that Gray had signed his first professional contract in October 2025, so his future looks set to be in Yorkshire.

The LS11 club labelled it as a long-term deal, but did not specify the amount of time that he had signed on for.

However, he is understood to be tied down until 2028, the maximum allowed by FIFA regulations for under-18 players.
