Celtic captain Callum McGregor is facing mounting pressure at the club following the arrival of Wilfried Nancy. That is according to Bobby Petta with the skipper reportedly a target for Brendan Rodgers in Saudi Arabia.

Reports suggest that the Irishman wants his new club Al-Qadsiah to launch an ambitious bid to sign captain McGregor and make him one of his first signings. It would be the second time he’d tried to lure the 32-year-old away having made efforts to sign him for Leicester City in 2019

Celtic will to fight to keep McGregor even if a money-spinning offer from the Middle East does come his way. The skipper has two-and-a-half years to run on his contract and is unlikely to be in a rush for leave.

And following the arrival of the Frenchman in Glasgow’s east end, two-time Hoops’ title winner Petta can detect added pressure being placed the skipper. He told The Sunday Post: “Callum McGregor has led brilliantly for a long number of years.

“He has been an inspirational leader and has always put the club first, but I think he now needs help. Under Wilfried Nancy, he can’t do it on his own.

There has been a change of shape and there appears to be lots of new tactical instructions. Callum is the man the new manager goes to, to lean on, to get his messages across.

Of course, it’s only natural that the captain is the man the manager trusts most on the field. But once the game is underway Callum needs to have more from those around him. Reo Hatate and Arne Engels need to be doing more.

There needs to be a way of taking some of the load away from Callum. His team-mates need to help him out much more.

“It’s up to the new manager to find a solution to this. This is really important.

“There is no time to waste. We all know it’s been a poor start to Wilfried’s managerial term and it needs to improve.”

Rodgers has pledged to improve the quality of the squad in the Saudi Pro League at his first press conference. Al-Riyadh report that the boss was promised “administrative support and stability” in the market for his desired targets with “large financial support” offered the boss a trump card in a potential reunion with McGregor in the Middle East.

Liverpool winger Mo Salah has been floated as a blockbuster target for Rodgers. Gulf News report that Qadsiah are considering a loan approach that will turn into a permanent move as the former Hoops’ boss launches his squad overhaul.
