Scott McTominay and Man Utd outcast secure dream Napoli trophy win as Scotland pal rues key miss

Napoli clinch silverware double but despair for Lewis Ferguson

Scott McTominay lifted another trophy with Napoli on Monday night after helping his side claim a 2-0 victory over Bologna in the Supercoppa Italiana cup final.

The annual competition between the four sides who finished winners and runners-up of Serie A and Coppa Italia the previous season was staged in Saudi Arabia. Napoli defeated AC Milan by the same scoreline last Thursday to reach the final while Bologna overcame Inter Milan in a penalty shoot-out on Friday after a 1-1 draw.

A double from Brazilian winger David Neres clinched a silverware double for the Naples outfit at the King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh to follow on from last season’s scudetto success.

While the win secured a second winners’ medal in Italian football for McTominay following his £25million move from Manchester United 18 months ago, it was a first taste of success at Napoli for his fellow Old Trafford outcast, Rasmus Hojlund, who joined the club on a season-long loan from the Old Trafford outfit during the summer. Both men played the full 90 minutes.

There was despair, however, for McTominay’s Scotland team-mate Lewis Ferguson, who had to settle for a runners-up medal on this occasion after captaining Bologna to the Coppa Italia last season.

The former Aberdeen man will also have a glaring miss on his conscience after passing up a glorious opportunity to equalise just minutes before Neres put Napoli two goals ahead in the second half.

McTominay and Ferguson were both deployed in midfield for their respective sides and it was the Napoli talisman who produced the game’s first moment of magic with a glorious defence-splitting pass to Eljif Elmas but the Scotland man was denied an assist when the winger blasted the opportunity into the side-net.

While Ferguson and Bologna struggled to impose themselves on the first-half, McTominay and Napoli were on the front foot and the Scot went close himself when his effort from a tight angle was blocked by the hand of goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia.

Ferguson had a huge moment of his own on 36 minutes when he raced back to clear a Leonardo Spinazzola effort off the line after Ravaglia had got a hand to the forward’s effort.

It only delayed the goal Napoli had been threatening by two minutes as Neres cut in from the right and curled a sensational strike beyond Ravaglia from 25 yards for the opener.

Ferguson had spent the first half operating in a deep-lying midfield role but he was pushed further forward at the start of the second half. He blazed one attempt over the bar but should have brought Bologna level on 55 minutes when he sent a free header straight at Vanja Milinkovic-Savic from just six yards out after brilliant wingplay from David Orsilini.

Napoli punished that gilt-edged miss a few minutes later when McTominay forced Ravaglia into a poor clearance which Neres pounced on before dinking the ball over the outrushing ‘keeper to seal a historic third Supercoppa Italiana for Gli Azzurri.

Another trophy win caps a dream year for McTominay, who was named Serie A Player of the Season for his leading role in Napoli’s title 2024-25 victory, before being nominated for the Ballon d’Or. He also scored one of the greatest ever Hampden goals to help clinch Scotland’s place at next summer’s World Cup with an overhead kick opener against Denmark in the 4-2 win last month that secured qualification.
