Danny Rohl got his Rangers reign up and running with a 3-1 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday.

The German suffered a heavy defeat in the Europa League in the first game in his new role on Thursday night, but it was a totally different story in his opening Premiership outing.

Derek Cornelius put Rangers ahead in the early stages, before George Stanger levelled for the visitors shortly before half-time.

The hosts’ quality told in the second half, as goals from Danilo and Youssef Chermiti quickly put the result beyond doubt.

Rohl will have been provided with plenty of food for thought by his side’s display, and a clear priority has already emerged for him in the January window.

Danny Rohl needs to replace Jack Butland at Rangers

Jack Butland has had some strong displays for Rangers so far this season, but he has never quite been able to shake the tag of being a somewhat error-prone goalkeeper since his move north of the border.

The 32-year-old is capable of both spectacular saves and baffling errors, and on Sunday, it was the latter that unfortunately reared its head once again at Ibrox.

The Englishman was at fault for Kilmarnock’s only goal of the game, as he came flying off his goal line and failed to get anything on Greg Kiltie’s corner, leaving an easy finish at the back post.

It was a moment of madness from the gloveman, and could easily have handed the visitors a route back into the game, had Rangers not come out with such confidence in the second half.

Butland’s performances earlier in the season rightly received plaudits, but the goalkeeping position is one which requires complete confidence in the man between the posts, and it’s hard to argue that the current number one is a totally safe option.

With that in mind, sourcing a capable replacement to take over from the veteran has to be a top priority for Rohl and the recruitment team in January.

Rangers were linked with a move for Pierce Charles during the summer transfer window, and the stars could now be aligning for them to land the Sheffield Wednesday stopper this winter.

The Owls have recently been placed into administration, meaning that saleable assets within the squad are likely to be cashed in on if reasonable offers are received.

Throw in the fact that Rohl is now at the helm, the manager who handed the 20-year-old his league debut back in March, and the door will surely be open for Rangers to pursue a deal if they choose to.

Charles is a hugely promising young ‘keeper, and if the Gers are serious about trying to find a replacement for their current option, then he would certainly be an exciting alternative.
