Leeds planning January move for RB Leipzig star as Farke identifies urgent need Romano-confirm

Leeds United are holding internal talks over whether to make a concrete January move for RB Leipzig defender El Chadaille Bitshiabu, with the Frenchman emerging as a serious option as Daniel Farke looks to strengthen his squad for the second half of the season.

The Whites head into the festive programme full of confidence after a thumping 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Elland Road on Saturday. The result extended Leeds’ unbeaten run to four matches and lifted them six points clear of the relegation zone, easing pressure after what had been viewed as one of their toughest spells of fixtures.

Momentum has been driven largely by a bold tactical shift from head coach Daniel Farke, who has moved away from his long-used 4-3-3 system and successfully implemented a 3-5-2 formation. The change has not only improved Leeds’ attacking threat but has also brought a new level of defensive solidity.

The new system has seen Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk form a reliable back three, with Leeds conceding fewer chances while remaining dangerous going forward. Rodon, in particular, continues an extraordinary run of availability, having now played 103 consecutive games for club and country.

However, the reliance on three central defenders has also exposed a potential weakness. Any injury or suspension could leave Leeds stretched, especially during the congested winter period. While Sebastiaan Bornauw provides cover and captain Ethan Ampadu can drop back from midfield, the club believe another specialist centre-half could be vital.

Information shared with transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey indicates that Leeds’ hierarchy have discussed squad planning extensively with Farke, and defensive cover is now viewed as a major priority not only for January but also looking ahead to future seasons.

One name repeatedly raised in discussions is RB Leipzig’s 20-year-old defender El Chadaille Bitshiabu. The 6ft 5in centre-back, a former Paris Saint-Germain prospect, is highly rated for his physical presence and long-term potential but has struggled for minutes this season, making just four appearances in all competitions.

Leeds believe Bitshiabu could benefit from the opportunity to play regular football in the Premier League, particularly within a back three that suits his attributes. Leipzig are understood to be open to a loan deal, though they are reluctant to agree to a permanent transfer for a player they still see as part of their long-term plans.

That stance aligns with Leeds’ cautious approach to spending in January. While the club are prepared to act if the right opportunity arises, they remain mindful of financial sustainability and would prefer not to commit heavily to a player who may initially rotate rather than start every match.

There is competition for Bitshiabu’s signature. West Ham are also believed to be monitoring the situation as Nuno Espirito Santo seeks defensive reinforcements. The situation was further clarified by respected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who confirmed that Bitshiabu is open to leaving Leipzig in the January window due to his lack of game time.

Fabrizio Romano said: “Understand El Chadaille Bitshiabu could leave RB Leipzig in the January transfer window. The 20-year-old defender will be one to watch as Premier League clubs have asked about the situation in the last days. Bitshiabu is currently not happy with his playing time.”

Romano’s comments have fuelled optimism among Leeds supporters that a deal could be possible if the club decide to act decisively.

For Farke, the priority remains maintaining momentum on the pitch while ensuring his squad is equipped to handle the physical and tactical demands of the Premier League.
