TALKSPORT JOURNALIST UNDER FIRE FOR COMMENTS ABOUT SCOTLAND’S NEW MANAGER SHE WENT TOO FAR

TalkSPORT journalist Shebahn Aherne has come under fire following comments about Scotland’s new manager, Sébastien Pocognoli, during a TalkSPORT TV discussion.

The journalist questioned the decision to appoint Pocognoli and argued that Scotland had other options available, particularly Scottish managers who understand the national team, the domestic game and the expectations surrounding the position.

Aherne’s comments have since generated a heated reaction among Scotland supporters online, with some fans agreeing with her concerns about the appointment while others believe her criticism crossed the line by placing too much emphasis on Pocognoli’s nationality.

During the discussion, Aherne questioned why Scotland had decided to appoint another foreign manager when there are Scottish coaches who could potentially take charge of the national team.

She went further by questioning Pocognoli’s knowledge of Scottish football and his suitability for the position, particularly after the difficult start to his reign.

“There are a lot of Scottish managers who could manage this team. I don’t understand why Scotland keeps looking elsewhere when there are people from Scotland who understand the game and could do the job,” Aherne said.

“Pocognoli knows nothing about the Scotland game, and after losing his first two matches, I don’t think he is the right man for the job,” she added.

Those comments quickly became a talking point among supporters, with some accusing the journalist of going too far in her assessment of the new Scotland boss.

@ScottishLad92 said: “She definitely went too far. Criticise the manager’s results, but making his nationality such a big issue is unnecessary.”

Another reaction from @CalumMurray took a different position, arguing that Scotland should not automatically reject foreign coaches.

“There are Scottish managers who could do the job, but that doesn’t mean a foreign manager can’t manage Scotland. Judge him on the football,” the supporter said.

@EmmaFraser also called for patience, pointing out that Pocognoli has only had two competitive matches to establish himself.

“Two games is far too early to write him off. Let’s see what Pocognoli can actually do before making a final judgment,” the reaction read.

Another supporter, represented by @DerekMcLean, questioned Aherne’s claim about the manager’s understanding of the Scottish game.

“I understand the frustration, but saying he knows nothing about the Scotland game after only two matches is ridiculous,” the supporter said.

@LewisGraham offered another perspective, suggesting that Aherne had raised a legitimate question but had been too harsh in her assessment.

“She made a valid point about Scottish managers being available, but I think the criticism of Pocognoli has gone too far this early,” the supporter said.

Pocognoli was appointed Scotland manager following Steve Clarke’s departure and arrived with experience from European football.

Before taking charge of Scotland, the Belgian coach worked in Belgium and France and had guided Union Saint-Gilloise to the Belgian league title during the 2024-25 season.

The Scottish Football Association backed the appointment and highlighted Pocognoli’s coaching experience and his record of developing players.

However, the beginning of his Scotland tenure has been difficult. Scotland opened Pocognoli’s reign with a goalless draw against Slovenia before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Switzerland.

The Switzerland defeat was particularly difficult because Scotland were reduced to 10 men following Jack Hendry’s early dismissal. Switzerland took advantage of the numerical advantage and went on to score three times.

The results have therefore provided ammunition for critics who believe Pocognoli should be questioned over his appointment.

At the same time, supporters who have defended the new manager have pointed out that two matches are a very small sample from which to judge a new international coach.

Pocognoli has also had to begin implementing his own tactical ideas while working with players who have limited time together at international level.

His first match against Slovenia showed some improvement after the interval, with Scotland responding positively to tactical changes. However, they were unable to turn their improved performance into a winning result.

The defeat against Switzerland then added further pressure, leaving Pocognoli searching for his first victory as Scotland manager.

The controversy surrounding Aherne’s comments has now added another layer to the debate.

The central argument among supporters is not simply whether Pocognoli has started well. It is whether the Scottish FA should have appointed a foreign coach in the first place and whether there were Scottish candidates who could have been considered for the position.

Some supporters believe having a manager familiar with Scottish football could be an advantage, while others argue that nationality should have no bearing on the appointment if the coach has the required experience and qualifications.

The criticism directed at Aherne has also been described by some supporters as being motivated by what they consider “tribal” sentiment. That is an accusation made by fans online rather than an established fact about Aherne’s motives.

Ultimately, Pocognoli will have the opportunity to answer the criticism through Scotland’s performances on the pitch.

The Belgian manager still has time to establish his style, build relationships with the squad and improve the team’s results.

But after a goalless draw and a heavy defeat in his first two competitive matches, scrutiny around his appointment is already increasing.

Aherne’s comments have consequently become part of a much bigger conversation about Scotland’s managerial direction, the role of Scottish coaches and what supporters expect from the national team.

Pocognoli’s next matches will provide another opportunity to demonstrate his approach, while the debate over whether Scotland made the right appointment is likely to continue.
