The transfer window opens for Scottish clubs on January 1 and many sides are gearing up for a busy spell.
Many of the Premiership’s top clubs – including Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and Hibs – are expected to be active at the start of next year.
We take a look at some of the main stories doing the rounds so far this weekend.
Josh McPake is in excellent form for St Johnstone.
Hearts ‘agree’ pre-contract deal
In-form St Johnstone winger Josh McPake is set to sign a pre-contract agreement with Hearts for next season, according to multiple reports.
McPake, 24, has netted 13 goals for the Saints this term to fire them to the top of the Championship. However, he is out of contract in the summer and it is claimed that Hearts boss Derek McInnes has swooped to land the former Rangers kid on a free transfer.
St Johnstone will be keen to hold on to McPake for the rest of the season, as he is one of their key men in a promotion push. The Jam Tarts are already bringing in another wide man in January in the shape of Kazakh forward Islam Chesnokov from FC Tobol.
Multiple suitors for Mulligan
Hibs midfielder Josh Mulligan is reportedly on the radar of several clubs around Europe due to his excellent form at Easter Road.
Mulligan, 23, joined Hibs from Dundee last summer and has emerged as one of their key players this season. He was recently called into the Scotland squad and can also operate as a right wing-back.
English Premier League sides Nottingham Forest and Leeds United have been credited with an interest in Mulligan, while French side Lille and German outfit Wolfsburg are also said to monitoring his situation.
Rothwell could move back to England
Sheffield United are considering a swoop for Rangers midfielder Joe Rothwell when the transfer window opens.
Rothwell was one of Rangers’ first summer signings but has fallen out of favour under new head coach Danny Rohl and has found it tough to adapt to Scottish football.
The 30-year-old’s stock remains high in the English Championship after impressing previously for Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United. And it is understood Rangers would be open to let Rothwell leave should the right deal materialise.
Palma future in doubt
Lech Poznan are unsure whether they will take up an option to buy Celtic loanee Luis Palma.
The Honduran moved to the Polish top flight in August and been a mainstay in Lech’s first-team affairs. Yet reports in Poland suggest the club’s hierarchy are not yet sold on a permanent arrangement.
Celtic reportedly inserted an option to buy of around £3.5 million for Palma, who does not appear to have a long-term future in Glasgow.
