Arne Slot did not hide his surprise after watching Rob Edwards substitute one of Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.’s most impressive players during their clash with Liverpool F.C.. The Liverpool manager admitted the midfielder had been causing serious problems for his team before the unexpected substitution shifted the momentum of the match.

Liverpool eventually secured a 3–1 victory in what turned out to be an entertaining and fiercely contested encounter. However, for long stretches of the game particularly in the first half  Wolves proved far from an easy opponent.

Playing in front of their home supporters, Wolves started the match with intensity and confidence. They pressed aggressively, closed down Liverpool’s passing lanes, and showed impressive composure when building attacks from the midfield.

For Slot and his coaching staff on the touchline, it was clear that Wolves had identified a tactical approach designed to disrupt Liverpool’s usual rhythm.

“We knew they would be competitive, but they were even better than we expected in the first half,” Slot said after the match.

“There was one player in midfield who kept everything together for them. He was calm under pressure and very intelligent with the ball.”

Liverpool initially struggled to break through Wolves’ defensive structure. The home side remained organized and disciplined, preventing Liverpool’s attacking players from finding space in dangerous areas.

During this period, Wolves’ midfield played a key role in slowing down the pace of the match and maintaining control of possession whenever possible.

However, the match changed dramatically shortly after halftime.

“When he came off, I felt the game changed,” Slot admitted.

Slot explained that Liverpool’s pressing system became much more effective after the player left the pitch, allowing his team to win possession higher up the field.

“Before that moment we had to be careful because he was always available to receive the ball and keep their play moving,” Slot added.

“It’s always difficult when you face a midfielder who is comfortable under pressure.”

The player Slot was referring to was Angel Gomes, who had delivered a composed and intelligent performance before being substituted shortly after the hour mark.

Gomes had been one of Wolves’ standout performers during the first half, completing several important passes and helping his team maintain balance in midfield. His calmness on the ball allowed Wolves to relieve pressure and launch counterattacks.

However, after Liverpool took a two-goal lead, Edwards opted to make changes as he searched for a more attacking solution.

Following the substitution, Liverpool gradually tightened their grip on the match.

With Wolves struggling to regain their earlier rhythm in midfield, Liverpool began dominating possession and creating more opportunities in the attacking third.

Their control of the game was eventually confirmed when Curtis Jones scored Liverpool’s third goal, effectively putting the result beyond doubt.

Wolves did manage to reduce the deficit late on when Hwang Hee-chan found the net, but the goal proved to be little more than a consolation.

Liverpool remained composed during the closing stages and comfortably saw out the victory.

Despite questioning the substitution decision, Slot was careful to praise Wolves for their overall performance.

“They played very well in certain moments,” he said.

“You can see that they are a well-organized team with quality players.”

Slot also emphasized that his players deserved credit for the way they responded after halftime.

“The second half was much better from us,” he explained. “We increased the tempo, we moved the ball quicker, and we were more decisive in front of goal.”

For Wolves, the defeat will be disappointing after a promising start to the match. Edwards’ side showed resilience and tactical discipline during the first half but ultimately struggled to contain Liverpool’s attacking quality once the visitors found their momentum.

Slot’s comments about Gomes’ performance, however, served as recognition of the midfielder’s influence during the early stages of the game.

Even in defeat, the Wolves midfielder’s composure and intelligence on the ball caught the attention of the opposition manager  a sign that his efforts on the pitch did not go unnoticed.
