Ruben Amorim will rotate his Manchester United team again for Sunday’s Premier League game against West Ham at Old Trafford – with all eyes on the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur in less than a fortnight’s time.

And while the United head coach has warned his top players that they will need to be sharp for the season-defining showdown in Bilbao on May 21, he is expected to rest several following their midweek semi-final win against Athletic Club. That is despite a much-changed team failing to keep things tight defensively away to Brentford last weekend, where they lost 4-3 for a club record 16th defeat of their league season.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes , defenders Harry Maguire and Noussair Mazraoui, midfielder Casemiro and winger Alejandro Garnacho will all be taken out of Sunday’s starting line-up.

But they will likely come back into the team for next Friday’s trip to Chelsea after Amorim recognised that they cannot afford to go into such a huge game against Spurs without match sharpness.

“No, they will play, because sometimes it’s better to play,” said Amorim. “What I will protect is those players who can get an injury. The last game before Tottenham, away to Chelsea, was moved to Friday, so we will have time to recover.

Bruno doesn’t have the problem of any injury, but Harry has, so we will have to manage that. But they have to play and it’s better to play than to stay out.

With some players, we have some doubts that they will recover, but they will push forward a little bit. We have to manage that, not to take risks and then to have big issues.

“Of course, they will fight for a place in the final. They will be ready, excited.

Victor Lindelof and Manuel Ugarte may be the only players to retain their starting spot from Thursday night. Altay Bayindir is expected to replace Andre Onana between the posts against the Hammers, while Tyler Fredricson and Luke Shaw could start at the back in place of Maguire and Leny Yoro.

Christian Eriksen and youngster Harry Amass could come into the midfield and Chido Obi expected to start up front, Mason Mount could also be in the starting XI.
