EYEWITNESS RAGES AT CELTIC BOARD OVER ‘LIES STATEMENT’ AFTER AGM CHAOS, CLAIMING ROOM “ERUPTED” WHEN RANGERS SONG BLASTED FROM SHAREHOLDER’S POCKET

What was intended to be a routine session of financial updates and governance discussions instead became one of the most disrupted AGMs in the club’s recent history. A number of fans accused the board of issuing a “lies statement” regarding chaos during AGM.

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting descended into extraordinary scenes as tensions between supporters and the board boiled over, culminating in an unexpected and chaotic moment when a Rangers anthem rang loudly from a shareholder’s pocket, stunning those inside the hall and forcing an abrupt halt to proceedings.

One eyewitness, who spoke after the event, said the meeting “never stood a chance” of running smoothly given the frustration felt by many in the room. “People were angry before we’d even sat down. They want honesty, they want transparency, and instead they got answers that felt rehearsed,” he said. “Then that Rangers song went off and the place just erupted. It was chaos.”

Anger Builds Over ‘Lies Statement’

The meeting had already been strained as shareholders repeatedly sought clarification on comments made by the club in recent weeks. Critics accused senior figures of “misleading supporters” about the true nature of internal decisions, including disciplinary disputes, communications strategy, and fan-group relations.

Whenever the board attempted to defend their position, interruptions were frequent. Several attendees raised their voices, demanding clearer answers, while others accused the club of telling “half-truths” and “acting against the interests of the support.”

The atmosphere became so tense at points that the chair was forced to intervene more than once to appeal for order. Each attempt to restore calm was met with mixed reactions, from supportive applause to audible frustration.

According to the eyewitness, “Every time a board member tried to move on, someone would shout, ‘Answer the question!’ or ‘Stop dodging it!’ It was relentless. I’ve been to AGMs before but nothing like this.

The Moment Everything Changed

The already tense room tipped fully into chaos during a board member’s explanation of the club’s strategic outlook for the coming year. Just as he began outlining upcoming initiatives, the hall was shaken by the sudden blast of a Rangers anthem from the back row.

It cut through the speaker’s voice instantly.

Witnesses say the shareholder responsible appeared “mortified” as he scrambled through his pockets to silence the device, but the ringtone continued long enough to leave the room stunned. Some fans laughed in disbelief, others shouted in anger, and a number demanded the shareholder be removed.

“It was like the air got sucked out the room,” said the eyewitness. “Then it was shouting, laughing, people turning around, people booing. I’ve never seen anything like it. You couldn’t script it.”

Stewards moved quickly toward the source of the noise, though the shareholder apologised profusely and insisted it had been an accident. The board paused the meeting for nearly a minute before attempting to continue, but by then the momentum of the session had been completely lost.

Board Struggles to Regain Control

Following the interruption, shareholders seized the moment to launch further criticism at the board, insisting the chaos was symbolic of wider issues within the club.

Several individuals shouted that the incident “summed up the state of the club” and accused the leadership of losing control both on and off the pitch. Others stated the club’s official communications had worsened relations with supporters, citing the so-called “lies statement” as a breaking point.

Although the board continued attempting to answer questions, the disruptions became more frequent, and the overall tone became increasingly hostile.

“The board looked shaken after that ringtone,” the eyewitness said. “It was already going badly, but that just tipped it into something else entirely. You could see they wanted it over.”

Meeting Ends Earlier Than Planned

After several further interruptions, the chair announced that the meeting would conclude earlier than scheduled. A formal poll was still called, ensuring that the official resolutions could proceed, but the open-floor Q&A typically the most anticipated part of the AGM  was abandoned.

The decision was met with a chorus of frustration from supporters who felt silenced, while others walked out shaking their heads at the extraordinary turn of events.

In a statement issued shortly afterward, the club acknowledged that the AGM had been “challenging” and expressed disappointment at the disruptions. The board reiterated their commitment to dialogue with supporters but noted that the atmosphere had made it “impossible to continue in a productive manner.”

Reflecting on the day, the eyewitness said the meeting would “never be forgotten for all the wrong reasons.”

People came expecting answers,” he said. “What they got was tension, excuses, and then that ridiculous moment when a Rangers song started blasting. It felt symbolic of the disconnect between the board and the support right now.”

The debates sparked by the meeting are expected to continue in the coming days as Celtic supporters look for clarity, unity and direction following an AGM unlike any other.
