Scott Allan found it strange to see Kelechi Iheanacho start for Celtic against Dundee United, but says it sums up their centre forward situation currently.
The experienced Nigerian hadn’t been in from the start since December but was suprisingly given the nod for yesterday’s defeat at Tannadice.
Tomas Cvancara had been ill through the week and, despite training on Friday, it was decided he wasn’t able to start. Iheanacho was preferred to Joel Mvuka, with Daizen Maeda used wide.
It didn’t turn out the way they wanted, with Celtic poor in a 2-0 defeat.
Assessing the game, their former midfielder Allan told BBC Scotland: “When you turn up as a player and see the surface, straight away you know exactly what type of game it’s going to be. Especially in that midfield area, Dundee United are going to be combative and get you running back towards your goal.
“But when you do have the ball and you’re a Celtic player, you then have to put your foot on the ball and show a bit of composure. As much as the pitch is bad and there were times where they could have played the right pass and everybody’s looking at the pitch to blame that, for me, I just thought they were bereft of any quality. And when they did get down the sides, there was no real belief that they were going to go by someone and create something.
“And in actual fact, Iheanacho is a strange one for me as well, just to come in especially in a game like that when we haven’t seen much of him of late. But I think that just sums up where Celtic are in terms of their number nine this season.”
