Celtic ‘lucky’ not to see red after Rangers controversy

Celtic were considered fortunate not to have had a player sent off during the first half of their match against Rangers at Hampden.

This is the view of Premier Sports pundits, who analysed the game and pointed out a controversial moment that could have left both teams with ten players each.

The match took a turn for the worse for Rangers after Johnny Kenny’s header from Arne Engels’ corner put Celtic in the lead.

Thelo Aasgaard was then shown a red card for a dangerous challenge on Anthony Ralston, catching him high on the thigh with his studs.

However, they were perhaps fortunate not to be reduced to ten men themselves.

A second incident occurred when Trusty clashed with Rangers’ goalkeeper, Jack Butland, in the box after a set-piece delivery.

Trusty caught Butland on the head, prompting a VAR check.

At half-time, Neil Lennon admitted: “It could have been a red. “I think it’s totally unnecessary. “Jack’s always favourite to get the ball. “When you see it from that angle, it’s not smart. “There’s no force in it but that’s not the point. “VAR checked it, they don’t think it’s a red but he is lucky.”

Steven Davis, a Rangers legend, was also critical of the challenge.

He said: “For me it is a red. “It’s really foolish from the boy. “Celtic are in a dream position in the game and he gives the referee the option. “He actually leaves his foot in there when he could have taken it out.”

BBC Radio Scotland’s Billy Dodds added: “That’s crazy when you are a man up and you do that. “He is a bit lucky.”

Steven Davis has brushed off rumours linking him to a role in Danny Rohl’s Rangers backroom team.

The newly appointed Ibrox manager has already brought in Sascha Lense as first-team performance manager and Matthias Kaltenbach as assistant coach.

He is reportedly keen to add another coach to his staff who has strong ties to the club and a good understanding of the Scottish game.

Names being speculated for this position include Davis, Lee Wallace, and Neil McCann.

The Northern Ireland legend appeared on Premier Sports’ coverage of the Rangers versus Celtic semi-final and addressed the rumours.

Mr Davis said: “From my point of view it has all been rumours and speulcation, I’ve not heard anything.

Obviously, I’ve had a lot of messaged from friends and people connected with the club asking the same question.

“But there’s been no conversations so unless you know any different, please let me know.”
