‘My belief is’… Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin makes audacious claim ahead of facing Celtic

Jimmy Thelin has been speaking to the press ahead of his Aberdeen side facing Celtic at Pittodrie.

The Hoops take on the Dons for the penultimate time this season ahead of the Scottish Cup final on May 24 at Hampden Park.

Celtic are in fine fettle heading into this clash having scored a whopping 19 goals in their last five matches, which included the 5-0 thrashing of Dundee United to secure the Scottish Premiership title.

Aberdeen, on the other hand, have lost their last two games and that could prove extremely costly in the race for third spot in the league.

Hibs have a firm grip on that position as they sit three points ahead of Aberdeen, so the Dons need to give everything against Celtic.

Thelin backs Aberdeen to deliver against Celtic

Aberdeen embarrassingly lost 4-0 to Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday, but Dons boss Thelin is adamant that his team are going to play a “really good game” against the champions.

It’s a strong claim from the Swede, who said: “Sometimes you get big setbacks, but the thing is how you bounce back. That’s the true quality of a team, how you react to a setback, and how we react to this one (Rangers defeat).

“I have a strong belief in the team. We have the capacity to play really good games and my belief is that we’re going to do it against Celtic.

“We have a strong belief in what we do and facing the champions at home is one of the best tests you can have. The hunger and the desire inside the squad is really high.

“I really believe we will go onto the pitch on Wednesday and show that to our fans. We have a strong belief to take this chance at home and then the other game after that against United.

“First of all, we have to give everything against Celtic.”

At his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Brendan Rodgers was asked whether the league game against Aberdeen and the Scottish Cup final are relatable in any way.

Rodgers replied: “No, not really. I think it’s one where it’s the last of our three-game week. So it’s been such a long season for us, so many games.

“I mentioned last Friday, I think everyone took that I meant it was going to be the next game against Hibs that we would make changes, but I said over the course of three games, the team will change, and that’s what will happen in this game.

“So, I don’t think there’s any relevance to it for us. It’s about, as I said, my longer-term goal over this period was to get the squad in the best condition I possibly could, and that means getting players some minutes in some games.

“There is a different context to this game. The Scottish Cup final is a special game in itself, and when that comes in 11 days time, we’ll be ready for that.

“This game is different, but it doesn’t change our ambition. We want to win the game, and importantly, we want to play well.”
