Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly facing a potential six-month suspension from UEFA after making controversial remarks about Tottenham Hotspur, the referee, and UEFA’s officiating standards during his post-match interview following the Europa League final defeat at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao.

In the final held on May 21, 2025, Tottenham secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, with the decisive goal  pressured by Spurs forward Brennan Johnson. 

Amorim’s post-match comments have drawn significant attention and criticism. While he expressed readiness to step aside if the board lost confidence, stating,

“This was a disgrace to football. Tottenham didn’t win  we were robbed. The referee was a joke, a pawn of UEFA’s agenda. Decisions were biased from the first whistle. If this is what European football has become, it’s rotten to the core. I won’t stay silent while integrity is thrown into the gutter.”

UEFA has strict guidelines regarding public criticism of match officials and the organization itself. Any comments deemed to undermine the integrity of the officiating or the governing body can lead to sanctions, including fines and suspensions.

“UEFA has opened an investigation into comments made by Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim following the Europa League final. UEFA upholds the principles of respect and fair play and will handle this matter in accordance with its disciplinary procedures.”
