Reece James “got away with one” when Paul Tierney and VAR ruled out a penalty after the Chelsea defender took Malick Thiaw to ground in his own area on Saturday evening, according to Chris Sutton.
The Blues defender had his arms all over the Newcastle United centre-half as Lewis Hall floated a corner in midway through the first-half of the Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge, with the Magpies star ultimately losing his footing and tumbling to the turf.
While Paul Tierney decided that play should continue, VAR intervened and put the game on pause after the ball went out for a throw-in shortly after.
As video replays showed James wrestling with Thiaw as he gained an advantage over the Chelsea player, Sutton – on Sky Sports commentary – made his views incredibly clear.
He said: “It’s Reece James on Thiaw and he’s not even looking at the ball. Thiaw gets the run on him, he’s taking one hell of a risk there.
“I mean, how much contact is there there? But the fact he’s not looking at the ball I think is a problem for him.
How much contact? But he’s running a hell of a risk and maybe Chelsea get away with one there.”
Newcastle were without a number of first-team players for their trip to the capital, with midfield maestro Sandro Tonali remaining on Tyneside due to illness.
The likes of Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon and Jacob Ramsey have also recently being struck down with illness inside the Magpies camp, although all three were selected for Saturday’s clash with Chelsea.
A club statement read: “Sandro Tonali misses out this afternoon due to illness. Speedy recovery, Sandro!”
That follows on from the Italian’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, commenting openly about his client’s future at the club just hours before kick-off.
When asked about Tonali’s initial move to Newcastle, Riso said: “The deal came about because a club like Newcastle with unlimited financial resources had decided to invest in Sandro. We considered the idea of having the player play in a higher-level league.”
On a possible exit from Tyneside to potentially Arsenal or Manchester City, the agent added: “Exactly, that was the goal from the moment he went to England – to try to make him a star player. I think he’s the Italian footballer with one of the highest values in the world.”
