That was proven by Martin O’Neill returning to the Celtic Park dugout for the first time in two decades, and bringing a new lease of life to the place.

But how old school coaches like O’Neill are being viewed in the modern game isn’t sitting well with Kris Boyd.

Boyd told the Warm Up Podcast that managers like O’Neill are viewed as ‘dinosaurs’ for not going with the flow of modern football, and its ‘buzzwords.’

But Boyd thinks the returning Celtic hero has proven, in his two games in charge, that he is still ‘elite’ at what he does.

“Where do you think this leaves Brendan Rodgers?” said Boyd. “For me, he is an elite manager for a period of time.

“But, you would have said 73-year-old Martin O’Neill was outdated. His time was by, and you would never have seen him back managing again.

“But he has come back in and managed to get a bounce out of this group that was very, very flat. It doesn’t look good for Rodgers right now.

“When you look at Celtic in the last few months. I know they have been winning games, but you expect them to win games for the quality that they have. I don’t think it’s been at the level Celtic have shown in recent years.

It wasn’t so long ago that Rodgers was comparing the Celtic team to Honda Civics after losing at relegation-threatened Dundee.

Fast forward to the present, and Celtic’s win over Rangers at Hampden, it’s not a good look on the departing coach.

“Brendan Rodgers continuously asked for better players,” added Boyd. “Two weeks ago, he was comparing them to Honda Civics, which doesn’t look great.

“There had to be some players in that Celtic dressing room, after that Dundee game, who were absolutely fuming.

“After the level of consistency, and what they have done. He knew exactly what he was doing.”
