Sunderland AFC have confirmed that Kristjaan Speakman has stepped down from his role, with the decision approved by the club’s board on Friday. Moving forward, newly appointed Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi will spearhead the sporting strategy after taking charge of football operations earlier this summer.
Speakman joined the club in December 2020, shortly before the takeover led by Kyril Louis-Dreyfus was finalised. Tasked with rebuilding a fractured football structure, he introduced a youth-focused recruitment model and oversaw a major cultural reset. His tenure saw Sunderland climb out of League One, reintegrate academy talent into the senior setup, and re-establish a strong connection between the team and its local identity.
In a heartfelt farewell message, Speakman described his five-and-a-half years at the club as “the honour of a lifetime.” He thanked his family for their sacrifices, acknowledged the dedication of players and staff, and praised supporters for their unwavering backing. Reflecting on his journey, he spoke of the pride in restoring a side that reflects the spirit of the region and building lasting relationships within the community.
During his spell on Wearside, Sunderland enjoyed three memorable triumphs at Wembley Stadium including two Play-Off Final victories and the club’s first win at the national stadium since 1973. His leadership coincided with one of the most transformative chapters in the club’s recent history, culminating in a return to the Premier League and the establishment of a modernised football infrastructure.
With top-flight status secured and a revised leadership structure now in place, the board has opted to usher in the next phase without Speakman at the helm. Ghisolfi will continue directing the sporting vision as the club builds on the foundations laid over the past five years.
