Celtic fans can breathe a sigh of relief tonight.

Brendan Rodgers’ side got off to a nightmare start against Sturm Graz, but would go on to secure a much-needed victory.

In truth, the result was a deserved one. Despite Toni Horvat’s opener, a quickfire double from Liam Scales and Benjamin Nygren turned it around, before a red card for Tochi Chukwuani buried the Austrians.

There were injury concerns for the Celts, which is worrying given upcoming fixtures. But on the pitch, there were clear reasons to be positive.

Scales shows the way

With the Celtic team struggling for goals of late, it’s telling that the breakthrough tonight came from defender Scales.

The scoring wasn’t opened until the hour mark when Scales opened up his left foot at the perfect time after the ball was helped into the middle of the box by Colby Donovan.

It’s his second goal of the season – Scales has been touted as one of the Hoops’ best performers of the season.

Major injury worries

The game had barely gotten under way when Kelechi Iheanacho went down with a mysterious injury, without having touched the ball.

He was replaced by Johnny Kenny before 25 minutes later Alistair Johnston, who was making his return from injury, had his hamstring pull up again.

Time will tell the extent of the two injuries, but with a top-of-the-table clash against Hearts approaching on Sunday, it couldn’t be worse timing for the two injury concerns.

Sebastian Tounekti a shining light again

When Sebastian Tounekti gets the ball, he runs at defenders – whether there’s one, two or three of them.

In the first half, the Tunisian international was the attack’s biggest outlet. His final ball isn’t always on the money, but the movement in the box is a bigger problem.

This Celtic team’s attack is badly suffering – it doesn’t bear imagining how bad it would be without Tounekti.

Another slow start

It has been a season of slow starts for the Celts, and tonight was the tenth time this campaign that they have failed to score in the first half.

Of course, it’s impossible to legislate for an opener like the one from Tomi Horvat which was a stunning strike from 25 yards – impossible for Kasper Schmeichel to save.

But once again, it took too long for Celtic to get going tonight. Sturm played through their midfield on a couple of occasions, and this will be a concern for the Hoops boss

90 minutes for Johnny Kenny

Kenny didn’t get on the scoresheet, but for 90 minutes tonight, he once again showed the type of striker that he is.

The 22-year-old is quick, hard-working and always moving off the ball. The missing part, at the moment, is finishing.

He had five attempts on goal tonight, and should Iheanacho’s injury rule him out of upcoming fixtures, he might need his shooting boots on in the coming weeks.
