Florent Ghisolfi says Sunderland are determined to keep building and pushing forward after reaching their initial target of 40 Premier League points.
The club’s director of football was a guest on BBC’s Football Focus show, which was held at the Stadium of Light on Saturday morning ahead of the club’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton in the Premier League. Speaking ahead of the game, Ghisolfi revealed his dream to try and emulate Leicester City’s iconic title win under former colleague Claudio Ranieri, but said it was important to build the club step by step. Ghisolfi said it was vital the team and club ‘stayed hungry’ despite reaching their primary objective for the season.
The first objective was 40 points, but we stay hungry because we are in the Premier League, the most difficult league in the world,” Ghisolfi said.
We cannot sleep even for five minutes and also we are trying to build this winning culture, we want to continue and to compete. So now it is onto the next objective. I remember always what Claudio Ranieri told me because I worked with him at AS Roma and I was always asking him, for a club playing for retention [to stay up], how can you go for the title? He said: First objective after you stay the same, next one top ten. And then the next one. We want to win the title, for sure! But now we have the next objective and we stay hungry.”
He has a big commitment for the club and also for the community. He asks me always to put the identity first. It’s very easy to work with him and I think he has an important future in football.
With Régis, I knew him before and that was one of the reasons why I was confident coming here. I think he is very calm, focused, working on the details. I think that he is not a big client for the media, because he is always calm! It’s the same with the owner, I think he is a fit for the identity Sunderland has. He is discreet, quiet, works a lot. He understood the game we have to play here, we are quite vertical [direct], we are brave and this is the most important thing.”

Sunderland injury worries mount in Brighton defeat
Dan Ballard is a new injury worry for Sunderland, Régis Le Bris confirmed after Sunderland’s loss to Brighton. The defender was forced off in the second half with a hamstring concern, with the head coach also revealing that Wilson Isidor had been managing a minor issue. Isidor is expected to be fit for next weekend’s clash with Newcastle United but the head coach will have some big decisions to make on a number of players.
