Anthony Gordon’s stunning £69.3 million move from Newcastle United to Barcelona has sent shockwaves across English football, but new reports suggest the Catalan giants were never primarily interested in his goals.

Instead, the real reason behind the transfer has now emerged  and for many Newcastle supporters, it makes the departure even harder to accept.

While Gordon scored 17 goals in all competitions last season and enjoyed the best campaign of his career, reports from Spain and England claim that his finishing ability was not the key factor behind Hansi Flick’s determination to bring him to Camp Nou. 

According to multiple reports, Gordon became a “special request” from Flick after Barcelona faced Newcastle in the Champions League. Despite Newcastle losing the match, Gordon’s relentless pressing, aggressive running and intensity reportedly left a huge impression on the German coach. 

Sources close to Barcelona claim Flick was fascinated by the winger’s ability to constantly pressure defenders, force mistakes and create chaos without even touching the ball. Rather than focusing on goals and assists, Barcelona’s coaching staff viewed Gordon as the perfect tactical weapon for Flick’s high-energy system. 

One report described Gordon as “arguably the best pressing winger in Europe,” highlighting how his movement creates space for teammates and fits perfectly into Barcelona’s modern approach under Flick. 

That revelation has left many Newcastle fans heartbroken.

For supporters who watched Gordon develop into one of the club’s biggest stars, hearing that Barcelona targeted him because of qualities beyond goals only reinforces how important he had become to Eddie Howe’s side.

The England winger was often criticised earlier in his career for inconsistency in front of goal, but Newcastle fans repeatedly defended him by pointing to his work rate, energy and willingness to fight for the badge.

Ironically, those same qualities may now be the reason Barcelona paid almost £70 million to take him away.

Flick reportedly felt Gordon’s defensive work, energy levels and willingness to press from the front matched exactly what he wanted from his attacking players.
