Switzerland Manager Murat Yakin’s Furious Post-Match Interview Went Viral After His Comment on Granit Xhaka Following the Dramatic Draw to Australia
Switzerland manager Murat Yakin was left visibly frustrated after his side were held to a dramatic draw against Australia, with his post-match interview quickly going viral due to his emotional and blunt assessment of the performance.
Speaking shortly after the final whistle, Yakin admitted he was disappointed with how his team managed key moments in the game, insisting that Switzerland failed to control proceedings when it mattered most.
“I am not satisfied, not at all,” Yakin said. “We had control in parts of the game, but we lost discipline at the wrong moments. At this level, that is not acceptable. You cannot switch off in decisive phases.”
The Switzerland boss pointed to lapses in concentration and a lack of game management as the main reasons they were unable to secure victory, despite being in a strong position at stages of the match.
“We didn’t manage the tempo properly,” he continued. “We allowed them back into the game too easily. In international football, if you do that, you get punished and that is what happened today.”
However, despite his frustration with the overall result, Yakin made a clear exception for one player Granit Xhaka, who he singled out for strong praise after another commanding midfield performance.
“If there is one player I cannot criticise, it is Granit Xhaka,” Yakin said. “He was outstanding again. His leadership, his control in midfield, his ability to organise the team that is exactly what we needed tonight.”
Yakin went further, explaining that Xhaka’s influence was one of the key reasons he remained on the pitch for the entire match.
“I didn’t see any reason to take him off,” he added. “He was always available, always demanding the ball, always trying to set the rhythm. Even in difficult moments, he was the one trying to pull the team forward.”
The Switzerland manager also suggested that Xhaka’s performance stood out in an otherwise inconsistent team display.
“Too many players were not at their level today,” Yakin admitted. “But Granit showed responsibility. He kept pushing, kept organising, and that is what leaders do.”
The draw has raised questions about Switzerland’s ability to close out matches, particularly when they have control, with Yakin insisting improvements must be made quickly ahead of upcoming fixtures.
“We need to be more ruthless,” he said firmly. “We cannot dominate parts of the game and then lose focus. That is something we must correct immediately.”
Despite the disappointment, Xhaka’s display was widely viewed as one of the key positives for Switzerland, with his composure and leadership helping stabilise the team during difficult spells.
