“We can’t waste money” – Wolves boss targeting shrewd summer additions

Vitor Pereira has saved Wolves from relegation and he is already working on taking them to the next level.

The head coach is eager to finish the final three games of the season well, but he also has one eye on the summer and the direction he must take this team.

With a clear strategy and idea of the kind of players he wants – both from a technical perspective and personality point of view – his challenge will be balancing the side.

Matheus Cunha is expected to depart with a £62.5million release clause in his contract and while there will be money to spend, owners Fosun are expected to continue their self-sustaining policy in the transfer window.

“If it’s possible, I want to keep almost the whole squad,” Pereira said.

“Of course, at the end of the season, you will find some players are not happy because they are not playing and they want to play.

Wolves were beaten by Manchester City on Friday night, and former player Matheus Nunes unsurprisingly received a bad reception from the travelling contingent.

The visitors went into this clash at the Etihad on a six-match winning run after most recently beating Leicester City 3-0.

In the early stages of the contest, Wolves were threatening and could have scored on numerous occasions, with Jean-Ricner Bellegarde notably missing a golden chance.

But on a night when fans directed their frustrations at Marshall Munetsi, who was poor in the game, a trademark Kevin De Bruyne strike handed Man City a 1-0 win over Wolves.

It was ultimately sad to see their seven-match unbeaten run come to an end, but at least the supporters were able to show their dislike towards Matheus Nunes.

Nunes is universally hated among Wolves fans for how he left Molineux in 2023.

The Portuguese midfielder completed a £53 million move to Man City that summer, but before switching to the Etihad, Nunes went on strike to force a move.

Ally McCoist slammed Nunes at the time for refusing to train and throwing his own teammates and fans under the bus.

It was a decision from the player that didn’t sit right with anyone, and unfortunately, he now faces a bad reception from supporters every time he comes up against Wolves.

That was the case on Friday night when Sky Sports News’ Anton Toloui pointed out that Nunes was booed when he touched the ball, and there were ironic cheers from the away end every time he was beaten by a man or misplaced a pass.

Journalist Liam Keen even said that Nunes was booed before the game by the travelling supporters after his picture popped up on the big screen.

Wolves arguably robbed Man City of £53m after selling the Portuguese international, as demonstrated by his performances under Pep Guardiola.

The 26-year-old has only found a regular spot in the team since Guardiola converted Nunes into a full-back, telling of the problems he had centrally, as pointed out by the Spaniard.

“I think he’s not a player to play in the middle because he’s not clever enough, in the composure,” he said.

Guardiola then continued by highlighting some positives about playing Nunes at right-back rather than in attack.

“The big mistake of full-backs is when you have the cross to the far post, where you are, always they are sleeping. He defended really well two or three crosses, like when Bruno put it to the far post for Dorgu.

“He has the attention and the physicality to do it. So he can play in that position and help us a lot.”

With a midfield duo of Joao Gomes and Andre, along with Nelson Semedo as a right wing-back, Wolves don’t even miss the presence of Nunes.
