Carlton  Cole has lifted the lid on Axel Disasi’s mentality since arriving at West Ham United and the insight paints the picture of a player fully committed to the fight ahead.

The French defender’s move to the London Stadium was far from straightforward. Disasi joined West Ham on loan from Chelsea after the official Deadline Day window had technically closed, adding an unusual twist to what was already a complicated transfer. In the days leading up to the deal, speculation suggested the centre-back was not entirely convinced about making the switch, with reports hinting at hesitation over the move.

However, whatever uncertainty may have existed has clearly been put to bed.

Since linking up with Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad, Disasi has quickly become an important piece of the manager’s defensive plans. West Ham were in desperate need of reinforcements at the back, with their defensive record ranking among the poorest across Europe’s top five leagues earlier in the campaign. The Hammers’ backline had been leaking goals at an alarming rate, and the pressure was mounting for immediate improvement.

That is exactly why Disasi’s arrival carried so much weight.

The 25-year-old was brought in not simply to add depth, but to make an instant impact and by all accounts, he has done just that. His composure, physical presence, and willingness to embrace responsibility have already helped steady a defense that had been fragile for much of the season.

Cole described Disasi as “massively happy” and fully “up for it,” highlighting his positive energy and readiness to compete. Perhaps most telling was Disasi’s own description of how he approaches big matches. According to Cole, the French international believes you must think like a “soldier” when facing strong opposition understanding that top teams are constantly trying to dismantle you.

That mentality speaks volumes about his approach. Rather than shying away from the challenge of a relegation battle, Disasi appears to be embracing it head-on.

Although he has only featured three times so far, his influence has already been noticeable. Two of those appearances contributed to clean sheets against Burnley and Burton, accounting for a significant portion of the shutouts West Ham have managed this season. While his involvement in the FA Cup victory over Burton was limited to a brief cameo of around 15 minutes, the broader sample of performances suggests a defender settling quickly into his new surroundings.

Of course, it remains early days. Three matches represent a small sample size, and sterner tests will undoubtedly lie ahead. But for a club that simply needed signs of progress and defensive resilience, Disasi’s start has been encouraging.

Financially, the deal has also attracted attention. The loan is believed to have cost West Ham around £1.7 million a figure that some initially viewed as steep for a short-term arrangement. Yet in the context of a relegation scrap, that fee could ultimately prove to be minimal if Disasi’s presence helps secure Premier League survival. The financial implications of staying up would dwarf the initial outlay.

One lingering question surrounds his long-term future. The agreement reportedly does not include an option or obligation to buy, meaning Disasi is currently scheduled to return to Chelsea at the end of the campaign. That leaves uncertainty hanging over whether his stay in east London could extend beyond this season.

Much will depend on how the remainder of the campaign unfolds. Survival could open the door for negotiations in the summer, while relegation would almost certainly complicate matters.

For now, though, the focus remains firmly on the present and on a defender who appears mentally locked in, ready for battle, and determined to help West Ham climb away from danger.
