Wilfried Nancy warned of Celtic challenge he must accept to stop Rangers fans ‘milking it’ amid early jitters
Wilfried Nancy has been put under scrutiny since joining one side of the Rangers and Celtic divide.
Wilfried Nancy has been told there’s only one way to stop the noise surrounding a rocky start to his Celtic head coach tenure – with Rangers supporters waiting to lap it up.
Defeats against Hearts and Roma in his first two games have brought intense scrutiny ahead of the Premier Sports Cup final versus St Mirren on Sunday. One of the things most up for debate has been his change to a three at the back system, and it was a talking point on Thursday’s Sportsound. Former St Mirren and Rangers star Steven Thompson says the only way to shut down the noise is to start winning ASAP.
Thompson said: “Welcome to Glasgow and it’s not going to get any better, you know, that’s the thing. It’s a harsh reality of being involved at Rangers or Celtic so it’ll keep going. This has got a long way to run. It’ll just keep going and the Rangers fans will milk it. He’s got to start getting wins.
What can Wilfried Nancy change at Celtic?
“I have no problem with a change of formation because I’m looking, I thought Celtic started the game really brightly (vs Hearts). You’ve got to say, if you’re a professional footballer, you’ve played in a three before. It’s not like he’s gone and put them into this formation that’s never ever been seen or used before.
“These are guys are top pros. They’ve been put into a formation where they know and should know what they’re doing, regardless of whether it’s a new manager or you’ve not played a three in a while, you know what you’re doing. It’s your job on the pitch, so I have no problem with that.
I think the one thing that you’re missing from it all, probably, is that Hearts were really good, and I think that’s been overlooked. Hearts were great in that game, really really good, and that’s kind of detracted from because all this fanfare about Wilfred Nancy, Hearts were brilliant in the game. It’s a statement result and one they needed.”
Arne Engels on Celtic cup final chances
Celtic midfielder Arne Engels said ahead of Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final: “Everybody is looking forward to a cup final. Hopefully it can end really well for us because that’s what we all want. It’s up to us to perform really well and then hopefully that can give us a boost. We need to perform because otherwise we will not win. So it’s up to us to just do that.”
“Everybody is really enjoying working under him and everybody is looking for what we can do in that system if we get everything right. It’s not always the system. As players we just need to keep going and be strong. So, hopefully we can do that on Sunday and then we will be flying.
I think we need to put a really good performance in. You can’t lose a cup final at Celtic so everybody’s looking forward to competing really well and hopefully getting a win. That’s really important for us as players and also for the fans because they deserve it. They’re always behind us so we are really looking forward to that cup final and hopefully we can win that.”
