Less than 24 hours after suffering a humiliating 7-1 defeat at Celtic Park, Hearts FC have sparked a major controversy by raising serious concerns over the conduct of Celtic supporters and calling on the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) to investigate incidents surrounding the match.

The situation has intensified discussions among supporters, with questions emerging over whether the allegations could have disciplinary consequences for Celtic if any breach of football regulations were established.

According to the report, Hearts have raised concerns about abusive chant attributed to sections of the home support. The club have also expressed concerns about the treatment of their players after the final whistle, claiming that some were subjected to bullying following the heavy defeat.

The development has shifted attention away from the result and towards the events surrounding the encounter, placing the conduct of supporters under the spotlight.

HEARTS CALL ON THE SPFL TO INVESTIGATE

Hearts called on the SPFL to examine the reported incidents and determine whether any rules governing supporter behaviour and the treatment of players have been breached.

The club believe that football authorities must take complaints of intimidation and abusive conduct seriously, regardless of the result or the identity of the clubs involved.

Hearts have also indicated that they are prepared to provide evidence to assist the authorities in examining the circumstances surrounding the match.

The proposed evidence could play an important role in determining what happened and whether any disciplinary action would be justified.

However, any investigation would need to establish the facts before conclusions could be reached.

HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN FC OFFICIAL STATEMENT

“Heart of Midlothian Football Club is deeply concerned by the incidents following our 7-1 defeat against Celtic at Celtic Park and has called on the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) to launch a thorough investigation.

The club has raised serious concerns over an abusive chant from sections of the Celtic support, as well as the verbal abuse and intimidation directed towards Hearts players after the final whistle.

We consider these incidents a serious matter that must not be dismissed as ordinary football rivalry. While we respect the passion and intensity of Scottish football, there must be clear boundaries between competitive support and behaviour that undermines the dignity and welfare of players.

Our players deserve respect and protection regardless of the result on the pitch. No footballer should be subjected to abusive chants, intimidation or personal harassment simply because they represent a particular club.

We have therefore requested that the SPFL investigate the reported incidents, including the chant in question and the treatment of our players after the match, to determine whether any rules governing conduct in Scottish football have been breached.

Heart of Midlothian FC is prepared to provide relevant evidence, including recordings and witness accounts available to the club, to assist the authorities in establishing the facts.

We expect this matter to receive serious and impartial consideration. If any breach of the regulations is established, appropriate disciplinary action should follow in accordance with the applicable rules. No club should be exempt from scrutiny, and the standards of Scottish football must be upheld consistently.

Our priority remains the protection of our players, the welfare of everyone involved in the game and the preservation of sporting integrity.

We will cooperate fully with the relevant authorities and await the outcome of the appropriate review.”

COULD CELTIC FACE A POINTS DEDUCTION?

The possibility of disciplinary action is likely to attract attention, particularly given the scale of Celtic’s victory and the rivalry between the two clubs.

However, a complaint does not automatically result in punishment, and a points deduction would depend on the specific rules applicable to any proven offence.

Football authorities would need to examine the evidence, determine whether a breach had occurred and consider the appropriate sanction under the relevant regulations.

Depending on the circumstances, disciplinary measures could include a warning, a financial penalty or other sanctions. A points deduction should not be presented as inevitable without evidence and an official decision.

Celtic would also have the opportunity to respond to the allegations and provide its account of the events.

The controversy has created a talking point among supporters concerned about the possible consequences for both clubs.

Celtic fans would be eager to see any allegations assessed fairly, while Hearts supporters would expect their concerns to receive appropriate attention from the football authorities.

The issue also raises broader questions about the boundaries between passionate football rivalry and unacceptable conduct. While chants and banter are familiar features of the sport, complaints involving intimidation or the welfare of players require careful consideration.

For Hearts, the request for an investigation represents an effort to bring the reported incidents before the relevant authorities rather than allowing the discussion to remain focused solely on the result.

The next step would be for the SPFL or another competent authority to determine whether the complaint falls within its remit and whether sufficient evidence exists to justify further action.

If an investigation proceeds, its findings would determine whether any rules were breached and what consequences, if any, might follow.

Until those facts are established, claims of wrongdoing and suggestions of a points deduction should be treated with caution.
