CELTA VIGO BOSS CLAUDIO GIRÁLDEZ DISMANTLES CELTIC FC AND CAPTAIN McGREGOR IN A POST-MATCH INTERVIEW RANT THAT LEAVES CELTIC ASHAMED AND UNABLE TO RESPOND

Celta Vigo manager Claudio Giráldez has sparked controversy following his side’s 2–1 victory over Celtic at Celtic Park, with his post-match comments targeting the Scottish giant captain, Callum McGregor, becoming a major talking point among supporters.

The Spanish side secured an impressive away victory after producing a second-half comeback, turning a difficult contest into a memorable result against Celtic in front of their own supporters. While Giráldez was pleased with his players’ response and determination, his comments after the final whistle shifted attention away from the result and towards an alleged confrontation involving McGregor.

Speaking after the match, Giráldez praised his team’s performance and their ability to remain composed under pressure. However, the Celta Vigo manager also expressed his displeasure over what he perceived as a lack of respect from the Celtic captain after the final whistle.

According to the Giráldez, He was particularly unhappy that McGregor walked away without acknowledging him or exchanging the customary greeting expected between opposing figures in football even though he tried to shake him.

“I am proud of my players for their incredible second-half comeback. Winning 2–1 at Celtic Park proves our mentality and quality. We came here to compete, and we deserved this victory.”

“I was disappointed by Callum McGregor’s behaviour after the final whistle. As captain, he should understand that respect is part of leadership. A captain must set the right example, regardless of the result.”

“I also praise the referee for remaining firm under pressure. Nobody should receive special treatment because they are playing at home. The rules must be the same for everyone, and we earned this victory on the pitch.”

The Celta Vigo manager was understood to have taken the incident personally, suggesting that the behaviour reflected poorly on the Celtic skipper’s attitude. His criticism went beyond the post-match exchange, raising questions about McGregor’s mentality and suitability as a leader.

Giráldez’s remarks, which described the captain’s attitude as bitter and delusional, have intensified the controversy.

Such criticism carries additional weight because McGregor is an established figure at Celtic, with supporters accustomed to seeing him represent the club during difficult moments as well as successful periods. Any suggestion that he has failed to demonstrate the standards expected of a captain is therefore likely to attract strong reactions from the club’s fanbase.

The manager’s position was that Celtic should not receive preferential treatment simply because they were playing at Celtic Park. He believe that the match officials had resisted the pressure associated with playing against a major club on its own ground.

The reaction among Celtic supporters has been divided. Some have defended McGregor, arguing that a single post-match interaction should not determine how his leadership is judged. Others have questioned why the captain would walk away without acknowledging an opposing manager, particularly after a match that ended in disappointment for the home side.

For critics, the incident represents another opportunity to demand higher standards from Celtic’s senior players. They believe that captains must demonstrate composure and professionalism even when results do not go their way.

@JamieMcTavish 🗣️ “Claudio Giráldez left Celtic Park with three points and left us with more problems to discuss 💀”

@FraserMcLean 🗣️ “As a Celtic fan, I can accept losing a football match, but seeing our club dragged into this controversy hurts 😭”

@EuanCampbell 🗣️ “The worst part is that Celtic fans are questioning the captain too. What is happening at this club? 🤦‍♂️”

@RossMacGregor 🗣️ “Giráldez came, won 2–1 and left with headlines. Celtic, what a painful night this has become 😂💔”

Others have urged caution, pointing out that an isolated exchange does not necessarily reveal a player’s character or establish that he lacks leadership qualities. Without the full footage, it remains difficult to determine exactly what happened between the two men or whether there were circumstances that influenced their interaction.

The defeat itself will also concern Celtic supporters. Losing 2–1 at Celtic Park after Celta Vigo mounted a second-half comeback has placed the performance under scrutiny, with attention likely to turn towards the team’s response in their next fixture.

For Giráldez, meanwhile, the result represents a significant achievement for his side. Winning away from home against Celtic required resilience and an ability to respond when the match became difficult, qualities the Celta Vigo manager was keen to highlight after the final whistle.

For now, the 2–1 defeat has left Celtic facing difficult questions about their performance, while the post-match exchange has created a separate debate over McGregor’s conduct and Giráldez’s assessment of the Scottish champions.

The incident remains a talking point rather than a settled verdict on the Celtic captain’s leadership.
