COLE PALMER WITHDRAWS FROM THOMAS TUCHEL’S ENGLAND SQUAD AHEAD OF UEFA NATIONS LEAGUE

Cole Palmer has withdrawn from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of the Three Lions’ opening UEFA Nations League fixtures and the Chelsea forward has suggested his decision was shaped by more than the muscle injury that has been cited.

Palmer was one of five players confirmed to have withdrawn from the England camp on Monday, alongside Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento. The Football Association confirmed all five had withdrawn due to their respective injury problems. Morgan Gibbs-White and James Garner have been called up as replacements.

The 24-year-old’s withdrawal is a significant setback for both club and country. Reports indicate Palmer is managing a minor muscle injury sustained during Chelsea’s defeat to Brentford, where he played the full 90 minutes. Chelsea sources suggest the injury requires careful management, with his return to club action targeted for the home fixture against Bournemouth on October 10.

However, Palmer’s decision to step away from international duty appears to be deeply tied to his omission from England’s 2026 World Cup squad a snub that clearly still weighs heavily on him.

“Every player that plays football wants to be at the World Cup,” Palmer told The Times after being left out of Tuchel’s 26-man squad for the tournament. “But it’s a decision that I cannot change and a hard one, for whatever reason.”

The Chelsea playmaker, who scored in the final of Euro 2024, revealed he had asked Tuchel to include him even in a reduced role, only to be overlooked entirely.

“I know what I could have offered something different to what the manager has picked,” Palmer said. “But like I said before, I can’t change the decision and I wish everyone the best.”

He added: “It’s like anything. If you’re told you’re essentially not good enough then you’re going to want to prove people wrong.”

Tuchel had been candid when explaining why Palmer was omitted from the World Cup squad, pointing toward a lack of consistency and fitness issues that plagued his most recent season at Chelsea.

“I think he suffers from a lack of individual form within the club,” Tuchel said at the time. “He was not as decisive or as influential as he was in the last seasons, throughout the whole season. Second of all, he was not very influential with us.”

The England manager also noted that Palmer had withdrawn from multiple camps through injury, adding: “His record with us was just not outstanding, not good enough to make him ‘no matter what, he is coming’.”

Sources close to the player indicate that the World Cup snub left Palmer feeling he had been unfairly judged, particularly given his willingness to play through pain and make himself available. His withdrawal from the current squad is now being viewed by some as a signal that he is prioritising his own fitness and career trajectory rather than risking further setbacks for a setup that left him out of the biggest tournament in football.

Palmer’s fitness struggles were well documented last season. He played through a recurring groin injury that he later admitted should have been managed differently.

“Before my groin injury, I’d never really been injured,” Palmer told Sky Sports earlier this season. “So then I would just come back and play when I shouldn’t have played. Obviously the World Cup was coming up, so I was in a bit of a dilemma thinking: ‘if I don’t play I’m not going to go. But if I play then, I can’t play properly.’”

He added: “Since I’ve come back I’ve been working every day to obviously stop it happening again. I just want to stay injury free, and if I’m on the pitch then I know what I can do.”

It was to be Palmer’s first England call-up since the World Cup snub. Tuchel had spoken about the Chelsea star’s return, saying: “Cole starts every game for Chelsea  he’s a regular starter, he decides matches, he has his numbers back in his game.”

England will now begin their Nations League campaign without several important players. Tuchel’s side face Spain at Wembley on Saturday, September 26, before travelling to Prague to face Czechia on September 29. They then take on Croatia in Rijeka on October 3, before completing the extended window with another meeting against Czechia at Wembley on October 6.

England have been drawn alongside Spain, Croatia and Czechia in League A Group 3. The top two teams will progress to the quarter-finals, with the knockout stages scheduled for March 2027.

For Palmer, the immediate priority will be recovery and managing his workload ahead of Chelsea’s return to domestic action. But his withdrawal from this England squad his first call-up since being left out of the World Cup suggests the wounds of that decision have not fully healed, and that the forward is now focused on proving his worth on his own terms.

England have confirmed that Gibbs-White and Garner will join the squad as replacements, giving Tuchel additional options ahead of the meeting with Spain. With four Nations League matches scheduled in the space of 11 days, England will need to manage their squad carefully.

For now, the confirmed position is that Palmer has withdrawn due to a muscle injury. But reading between the lines, the World Cup snub appears to have played a significant role in his decision to step away.
