Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović has reportedly been left reflecting on a fiercely contested encounter against Everton after his side were held to a dramatic 2–2 draw, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall emerging as the player at the centre of the story.
It was an intense afternoon, with both teams showing determination, attacking ambition and a refusal to surrender. Hull had reasons to believe they could secure all three points, but Everton’s quality and resilience ensured the visitors left with a share of the spoils.
For Jakirović, the performance of his own players deserved recognition. However, the influence of Dewsbury-Hall provided a particularly interesting talking point when the conversation turned towards Everton’s contribution.
Speaking to journalists after the final whistle, Jakirović was asked to assess his team’s performance following the 2–2 draw.
The Hull manager acknowledged the disappointment of failing to win but insisted that his players had given everything throughout a demanding contest.
“First of all, I have to give credit to my players because they worked extremely hard today. We knew Everton would be a difficult opponent, and we understood that we would have to be organised, aggressive and brave whenever we had the opportunity to attack.
“I thought we showed those qualities for large parts of the game. We created problems for Everton, we competed for every ball, and we showed that we have the ability to challenge a team with their quality.
“When you score twice against an opponent like Everton, you naturally believe you can win the game. That is why the result is disappointing. We wanted three points, and I believe the players did enough in terms of effort and commitment to give ourselves a chance of achieving that.”
Hull had to withstand pressure while also looking for opportunities to hurt Everton going forward. The contest became increasingly tense as both sides pushed for control, and the 2–2 scoreline reflected how difficult it was for either team to establish a decisive advantage.
Another journalist then asked Jakirović what he made of Everton’s performance and whether the visitors had done enough to deserve a point.
The Hull boss acknowledged that Everton possessed players capable of changing a match, particularly when they found space in dangerous areas.
“Everton made life very difficult for us. They have quality in their team, and when you allow players of that level to find their rhythm, they can punish you.
“We had to remain focused because they were constantly looking for ways to hurt us. Even when we felt we were in a good position, Everton found ways to respond.
“That is what makes this result frustrating. I respect Everton, and I respect the way they competed. They did not give up, and they made sure we had to fight until the final whistle.”
The response highlighted the fine margins involved in a match where Hull had produced enough attacking moments to believe victory was possible, yet Everton found the answers needed to avoid defeat.
The conversation then turned to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, whose contribution was a major positive for Everton.
The midfielder scored Everton’s equaliser and helped drive their response as the visitors fought their way back into the contest. His ability to influence the game in important moments made him a natural candidate for discussion after such a closely fought encounter.
In this interview, Jakirović was asked whether Dewsbury-Hall’s performance had made the difference between Hull winning and drawing.
The manager responded:
“When you look at the game, you have to recognise the influence certain players can have. Dewsbury-Hall was important for Everton. He showed quality, composure and the ability to make an impact when his team needed someone to step forward.
“We worked hard to try to control the game, but Everton have players who can change the situation in a moment. Dewsbury-Hall was one of those players, and his contribution made our task much more difficult.
“Of course, football is never about one player alone. We had our opportunities, and we must look at what we could have done better. But you cannot ignore the influence he had on Everton’s response.”
For Everton, the 2–2 draw offered encouragement because the team showed resilience when the contest threatened to slip away. Dewsbury-Hall’s equaliser demonstrated his importance, while the overall response underlined Everton’s ability to fight back in a difficult away fixture.
For Hull, the disappointment will be that a strong performance did not produce the victory their supporters wanted. Jakirović can take positives from his players’ commitment, but the result also provides lessons about managing decisive moments against quality opposition.
Ultimately, this was a contest in which neither side could secure complete control. Hull pushed hard for victory, Everton refused to surrender, and Dewsbury-Hall’s influence helped ensure the visitors avoided defeat.
