Motherwell FC have taken a strong stance following their 2–0 defeat to Celtic, releasing a statement expressing serious concerns about key issues, the conduct of visiting supporters and events that unfolded after the match.
The Scottish Premiership encounter ended with Celtic collecting all three points, but the result has now been overshadowed by controversy after Motherwell questioned several decisions made by the match officials.
The home side believe Celtic benefited from key refereeing decisions during the contest and have called for the relevant authorities to examine the incidents. Motherwell have also raised concerns about the behaviour of some Celtic supporters, who allegedly intimidated home fans after the final whistle.

The club have now requested a formal review of the match and called for disciplinary action where appropriate, setting the stage for a potentially heated dispute within Scottish football.
Motherwell’s frustration centres on decisions they believe worked in Celtic’s favour during the match.
Despite competing for a positive result on home soil, Motherwell were unable to prevent Celtic from securing a 2–0 victory. The outcome has left the home side demanding greater scrutiny of the officiating, with the club insisting that controversial decisions should not be overlooked simply because the final whistle has been blown.
The incident has also sparked discussions about consistency in Scottish football, particularly when decisions during important matches can influence the momentum of a contest.
Motherwell want the relevant authorities to examine the match footage and determine whether the officials handled the disputed situations correctly.

In their statement, Motherwell addressed the officiating, the alleged intimidation of their supporters and their demand for a formal investigation.
Motherwell FC’s statement:

“Motherwell Football Club is deeply disappointed by the events surrounding our match against Celtic and believes that several serious issues require immediate attention from the relevant football authorities.
“Throughout the contest, we witnessed decisions that raise significant questions about the consistency and fairness of the officiating. While we respect the outcome of matches, we also believe that every club deserves equal treatment and that questionable decisions must be examined objectively.
“We are particularly concerned about incidents during the game that we believe deserve a thorough review. The integrity of Scottish football depends on confidence in the officials, and that confidence must be protected through transparency and accountability.
“Furthermore, we strongly condemn the alleged intimidation of Motherwell supporters by individuals associated with the visiting support towards the end of the match. Football should be an environment where supporters can attend games without fear, threats or intimidation.
“We have therefore requested that the appropriate authorities review the relevant match footage, examine the disputed refereeing decisions and investigate the reported incidents involving supporters.
“We also ask that any individuals found to have breached the applicable rules face appropriate disciplinary consequences.
“Our request is not about refusing to accept defeat. It is about ensuring that the rules are applied consistently and that every club is held to the same standards.
“We expect the relevant authorities to take these concerns seriously and provide clarity on the outcome of their review.
“Motherwell Football Club will continue to stand up for our supporters, protect the integrity of the competition and pursue this matter through the appropriate channels.”
Celtic could face disciplinary scrutiny
Motherwell’s demand for a review could put additional pressure on the relevant football authorities to examine the incidents surrounding the fixture.

However, a points deduction would not automatically follow from a club’s complaint. The authorities would need to establish whether Celtic or any individuals associated with the club breached specific regulations and determine the appropriate sanction under the applicable rules.
Controversial refereeing decisions alone would not ordinarily justify a points deduction. Allegations involving supporter conduct would also require evidence and a proper disciplinary process.
If an investigation establishes a serious breach of the relevant regulations, disciplinary action could follow. The nature of any sanction would depend on the findings and the rules governing the competition.
For Celtic, the immediate priority will be to respond appropriately if the club is formally contacted by the Authorities.
The allegations concerning the treatment of Motherwell supporters have added another dimension to the controversy.
Football authorities take supporter safety seriously, and any verified incident involving intimidation or threatening behaviour deserves proper investigation.
Stadium footage, witness accounts and reports from stewards could help establish what happened after the match. Any disciplinary response would depend on the evidence and whether the individuals involved can be identified.
Motherwell’s position is that supporters should be able to attend matches without fear, regardless of which team they support.
The next significant development will be whether the relevant authorities formally investigate Motherwell’s complaint and what conclusions they reach.
Celtic’s 2–0 victory remains the result on the pitch, but any confirmed disciplinary proceedings could bring further attention to the match.
Motherwell want answers over the officiating and alleged supporter intimidation, while the possibility of sanctions will depend on the findings of any investigation.
the situation presents another potentially heated chapter in Scottish football, with the focus shifting from the final score to questions of fairness, accountability and supporter safety.
