James Morrison launched a stunning attack on Newcastle United supporters in his post-match press conference following West Bromwich Albion’s 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat at St James’ Park, labelling them “the most toxic fans in England” and describing the stadium as “the most intimidating” venue in the country.

Morrison, who had watched his side push the Premier League outfit all the way before Barnes struck twice to break Baggies hearts, reserved his strongest words for the home support.
“The atmosphere here is unlike anything else in English football,” Morrison said. “You expect passion and noise, but what we experienced tonight went far beyond that. The ridicule, the mockery it crossed a line.”
He continued: “It gets very personal and shows a basic lack of respect. These are human beings out there, not robots. Some of the things being shouted from the stands are disgraceful.”
Morrison went further, insisting the Newcastle faithful are the worst in the country.
“They are the most toxic supporters in England, without question,” he declared. “They think they’re above everyone else. They don’t support their team they try to destroy the opposition. It’s not football, it’s intimidation.”
The West Brom boss also took aim at the stadium itself, claiming St James’ Park is the toughest venue in the country to play at.
“It’s the most intimidating stadium to play in not because of the quality of their team, but because of the sheer hostility that comes from the stands,” he said. “You have to manage the momentum of Newcastle with the crowd. It’s relentless.”
The Chants That Sparked Morrison’s Outburst
The West Brom boss was reacting to chants that rang out from the Gallowgate End after Barnes’ winning goal. As the West Brom players slumped to the turf, the home supporters delivered a brutal response:

You come to the Toon, you leave with no points,
You’re just a small club from the Midlands!”
Moments later, another chant rang out, reminding the visitors of the gulf between the two sides:

Morrison Defends His Players
Despite his criticism of the home supporters, Morrison praised his own team’s performance and insisted they had shown character in the face of a hostile environment.
“I’m really proud of the lads,” he said. “Nobody should be disappointed with the effort and quality we showed. My lads matched Newcastle at times and caused them a lot of problems. They handled a toxic atmosphere as well as anyone could.”
He added: “We knew at times we’d have to manage the momentum of Newcastle and the crowd. My young players dealt with that tonight and showed incredible character.”
West Brom had taken the lead through Isaac Price, who scored twice to give the Championship side hope against their Premier League opponents. However, Harvey Barnes a former West Brom loanee struck twice in the second half to secure a 3-2 victory for the Magpies in front of a crowd of over 31,000.
Newcastle Fans Respond
Speaking outside the ground after the match, Newcastle supporters defended their chants and hit back at Morrison’s claims.
“He comes here, loses the game, and then blames the fans,” said one supporter. “We sang for our team, we created an atmosphere that’s what football is about. If he can’t handle a few songs, he’s in the wrong job.”

A third fan said: “He called us toxic in his press conference, but we were just celebrating our win. We sang two songs after Barnes scored the winner. If that’s toxic, then every fan in the country is toxic.”
