Álvaro Arbeloa had plenty to say after Fulham produced a dramatic 3–2 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium, but it was his assessment of the quality and threat within the Hammers’ squad that caught particular attention.
Fulham booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a thrilling contest in which West Ham twice fought back from behind. Oscar Bobb eventually settled the tie with a brilliant late strike, giving Arbeloa an important victory during a difficult start to his tenure at Fulham.
The match itself had almost everything. Rodrigo Muniz opened the scoring for Fulham before West Ham responded through Morato. César Palacios then restored Fulham’s advantage, only for Pablo to level the contest again before half-time.
With both teams searching for the decisive moment, Arbeloa turned to his substitutes and eventually saw Bobb produce the match-winning moment in the 78th minute.
However, the Fulham manager was far from completely satisfied.
Arbeloa admitted that his side had given West Ham opportunities and questioned the defensive performance, particularly after the hosts repeatedly found ways back into the game. His comments reflected the reality of a match in which Fulham had to survive sustained pressure during the closing stages.
Yet Arbeloa also made clear that he had enormous respect for the quality available to West Ham.
The Fulham boss pointed out that West Ham remained capable of putting a Premier League-level side onto the pitch when their substitutions arrived. Jarrod Bowen, Taty Castellanos and Manor Solomon were introduced during the second half as the hosts pushed desperately for an equaliser.
That observation is significant because it highlights exactly why Fulham had to work so hard to protect their advantage.
Bowen, in particular, remained a major threat during the closing stages, while Castellanos also had an opportunity that could have changed the outcome. West Ham ultimately could not find the finishing touch required to force extra time.
Arbeloa’s comments about West Ham therefore became an important part of the post-match discussion.
Rather than simply celebrating the victory, the Spanish coach recognised that his team had faced a side containing players capable of changing the game almost immediately. His assessment also showed why Fulham were forced to remain alert until the final whistle.
For Arbeloa, though, the biggest positive was the mentality shown by his own players.
Fulham had made nine changes to their starting lineup, yet they managed to withstand West Ham’s comeback attempts and eventually find a winner. Several young players were also introduced, including Shea Charles, Gonzalo García and Manuel Ángel.
Arbeloa specifically called for patience with those youngsters, stressing that Fulham have talented players who need time and support to develop.
The victory could prove valuable for Fulham after a difficult opening to the Premier League campaign. Arbeloa had already earned his first league point with a 0–0 draw against Liverpool at Anfield, and the West Ham victory provided another positive result to build upon.
For West Ham, the defeat was frustrating because they twice recovered from losing positions and pushed strongly for another equaliser.
But ultimately, Bobb’s late intervention separated the sides.
Arbeloa will now hope the result gives Fulham confidence, while West Ham will have to focus on their next challenge.
