Mikel Arteta Accused of Disrespecting Leeds United After Calling Them a “Mid-Table Club” Ahead of Arsenal Clash.

Mikel Arteta has sparked a furious backlash from Leeds United supporters after comments made in his pre-match press conference were branded “arrogant,” “condescending,” and “disrespectful” by the Whites faithful.

The Arsenal manager, speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium, appeared to dismiss Leeds’ impressive start to the season  and fans across Yorkshire are absolutely furious.

What Arteta Said

When asked whether Leeds’ position in the top five had surprised him, Arteta responded with what many initially interpreted as a measured, respectful tone

“When I watch their games, no. I think they fully deserve where they are because they’ve earned it. We know their qualities we talked to the players about them in the last two days, and we are fully ready for it.”

On the surface, those comments seemed harmless enough. But it was his follow-up remarks that truly ignited the fire and sent Leeds supporters into a frenzy.

“Let’s be honest, Leeds is a mid-table club. They’re in a position they won’t be able to maintain. By the end of the season, they’ll go back to their original position. That’s just the reality of the Premier League.

Those words have been interpreted by Leeds supporters as a direct insult  a suggestion that their club doesn’t belong among the elite and will soon fall back down the table where Arteta believes they belong.

Leeds Fans React

The reaction on social media has been swift, fierce, and unforgiving.

@LUFC_Mot posted: “Arteta calling Leeds a ‘mid-table club’ is pure disrespect. Embarrassing from a manager whose team just got battered 3-0 by Brighton.”

@WhitesForever wrote: “Provocative comments from a manager who thinks he’s above everyone. ‘Mid-table club’? Worry about your own backyard, Mikel.”

@LeedsTillIDie added: “He’s rattled. You can see it. Trying to play mind games because he knows we’re a threat. ‘Mid-table club’ what a joke. We’re here on merit and we’re not going anywhere.”

@EllandRoadEnd posted: “Arteta disrespecting Leeds again. He never learns. First the ‘dentist’ comment, now calling us mid-table. Elland Road remembers everything.”

@MarchingOnTogether wrote: “This is what happens when a manager feels the heat. Calling us mid-table is just his way of coping.”

@YorkshireProud added: “Arteta has no class. You don’t talk about another club like that, especially one with our history. He should focus on fixing his own team.”

A Pattern of Disrespect?

This isn’t the first time Arteta has rubbed Leeds supporters the wrong way. In fact, it appears to be part of a concerning pattern.

In 2020, he compared facing Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds to “going to the dentist”  a remark many felt trivialised the club’s achievements and reduced a historic institution to a painful inconvenience.

In 2022, after a narrow Arsenal win at Elland Road, he claimed the atmosphere “didn’t faze” his players, which some Leeds fans saw as dismissive of their famous home support and the intimidating environment they create.

Now, with Leeds flying high and Arsenal desperate to recover from a humiliating defeat to Brighton, Arteta’s latest comments have poured fuel on an already simmering fire.

What’s Really Behind the Comments?

Some pundits believe Arteta’s remarks were a deliberate attempt at psychological warfare  belittling Leeds publicly to pile pressure on their players, while simultaneously motivating his own under-fire squad ahead of a crucial match.

Others see it differently. Former Leeds striker Tony Yeboah told reporters: “It’s disrespect, plain and simple. You don’t call a club like Leeds a ‘mid-table club.’ We have history, we have passion, we have a team that can beat anyone on our day. Arteta should show some humility and focus on his own problems.”

Former Leeds captain Lucas Radebe also weighed in: “Leeds United is not a mid-table club. This is a club with tradition, with fight, with supporters who would die for the badge. Arteta may regret those words.”

The Stakes

Arsenal head into Saturday’s match under immense pressure, sitting below Leeds in the early-season table  a fact that makes Arteta’s comments all the more baffling to Whites supporters. With both teams desperate for points and pride on the line, the stage is set for a fiery encounter at the Emirates.

And if Leeds pull off a result, Arteta’s words will be thrown right back in his face.

The Verdict

Whether Arteta intended to disrespect Leeds or not, the damage is done. A proud club with a fiercely loyal fanbase feels slighted and they won’t forget it in a hurry.

Leeds United has a rich history, a passionate following, and a team that has started the season brilliantly. To call them a “mid-table club” is not just inaccurate  it’s a slap in the face to everyone connected with the club.

One thing is certain: when the whistle blows on Saturday, Leeds United will be playing with a point to prove. And Arteta will be watching from the dugout  hopefully with a lesson learned.
