Dominic Calvert-Lewin has risked fresh controversy after appearing to publicly call out a Premier League legend following Leeds United’s dominant 4–1 victory over Newcastle United on Monday night.
The Leeds striker, who produced a man-of-the-match performance at Elland Road, found himself back in the headlines for the wrong reasons after aiming a pointed remark at the former Newcastle and England striker whose pre-match comments had lit a fire under Daniel Farke’s side.
Calvert-Lewin, who joined Leeds on a free transfer from Everton in August, has been reborn at Elland Road. But even he could not have anticipated the storm his post-match comments would create.
The Response on the Pitch
Leeds answered in the most emphatic way possible.

Shearer acknowledged the atmosphere but remained dismissive of Leeds’ chances, saying: “It’s always a ferocious atmosphere at Elland Road. It’s only down the road really, an hour and a half down the road from Newcastle, so there’ll be thousands of fans travelling down there. Elland Road’s a great atmosphere. I’m going to go for a Newcastle away win. They’re unbeaten this season, two wins in the cup, and three in the league. I am going to go for an away win, and I hope the boys can keep this good run going.”
He suggested the gulf in stature between the two clubs would prove decisive and questioned whether Farke’s side had the quality to live with a team of Newcastle’s calibre.
To make matters worse, Shearer doubled down in the build-up, claiming Leeds would struggle to cope with Newcastle’s “superior class” and predicting a “routine” evening for the visitors. Those words were broadcast live for the world to see. And Calvert-Lewin clearly didn’t forget.
Calvert-Lewin Lets Rip
After the match, Calvert-Lewin made it clear he had not forgotten the pre-match comments.
“I saw what was said. A small team, apparently. A small stadium down the road,. A comfortable win for them,. I hope whoever said that enjoyed the game as much as we did.”
“People get paid to talk. We get paid to win football matches. Tonight, I know which job I’d rather have.”
“You can question us. You can question our chances. But to sit there and call this club a small team and this stadium a small ground? That’s disrespectful.”
“This club has history. This stadium has history. And nights like this remind everyone what Leeds United is about.”
Shearer’s Mid-Match Meltdown
As Leeds raced into a 3–0 half-time lead, Shearer took to social media to vent his frustration at his former club.
Taking to X, he wrote: “An absolute [expletive] show from the Toon. 3-0 at half time is embarrassing.”
That sums up the general feeling for the Magpies, but does totally ignore the success of the hosts.
The biggest kicker for Shearer will be that the possession was evenly split at 51 to 40 per cent, so there aren’t many excuses for the gulf in quality.
The Fallout
The remark has divided opinion.
Supporters of Calvert-Lewin argue the striker was entitled to defend his club after a performance that so emphatically silenced the doubters and after a pundit who should know better dismissed them so casually.
Others, however, believe the Leeds striker has made a mistake by engaging with pundits at all, warning that it risks distracting from a landmark victory and handing his critics more ammunition.
But for Calvert-Lewin, the message was clear: question his team’s chances, but don’t disrespect the badge.
