Sergej Jakirović may have walked away from the Stadium of Light without the result he wanted, but his post-match assessment of Sunderland has given supporters something completely different to talk about.
Sunderland defeated Hull City 1–0 in a fiercely contested Carabao Cup encounter, with Chemsdine Talbi eventually producing the decisive moment in the 71st minute. But despite the narrow scoreline, the match was anything but simple for either side.
The intensity was obvious from the opening stages.
Sunderland had to remain patient, while Hull continued looking for opportunities to disrupt the home side and force an opening. Every challenge mattered, every mistake carried danger and, with only one goal separating the teams, the contest remained alive until the final whistle.
